Thieves Break Into Church, Blow Up Safe & Walk Away With Over K70, 000 Cash

THIEVES on Tuesdayy broke into the Chipata Diocese Treasurer General’s office through the ceiling, blew up a safe and stole thousands of Kwacha and U.S dollars in cash, Eastern Province Commissioner of Police Luckson Sakala has said.

Mr Sakala said in an interview yesterday that the thieves accessed the Treasurer General’s office after they broke into one of the offices and went through the ceiling board to enter the Treasurer General’s office and blew up the safe and got away with about US$3,000 and K18, 000 cash.

He said the thieves broke into the treasurer generals’ office between 01:00 and 02:00 hours, adding that police were investigating the theft but no arrests had been made so far.

“There was a break-in in the office of Chipata Diocese Treasurer General’s office and money in form of $3000 has been stolen from the safe after blowing off the safe and this occurred in the early hours of today (yesterday) between 01 and 02:00hrs.

“They failed to use the door because it’s like they have a very strong security system it was not easy for the thieves,” he said.

Mr Sakala said this was not the first time that thieves had stolen from the Chipata Diocese offices. In other previous incidences, thieves had even broken into the house of Diocesan Bishop George Lungu, he added.
