ZAMPOST is experiencing financial problems and failing to pay workers’ salaries because it is owed huge sums of money by public institutions, Postmaster General Bright Ngoma has said.
And workers at ZAMPOST head office in Lusaka yesterday went on go-slow demanding to be addressed by management why the company was having challenges to pay workers their salaries.
Mr Ngoma said in an interview yesterday that the company was in financial quagmire because public institutions, which were the major clients, were failing to pay their debts to the company. He said it was prudent that government institutions settled their debts to relieve ZAMOST from the stress it was going through.
“The bigger chunk of money is being owed by government institutions and this has made us to have challenges when it comes to paying our workers,” he said.
He, however, said management was working tirelessly to collect funds which the company was being owed by the clients in addition to other efforts to raise enough resources for its smooth operations and ensure that the challenges being faced were addressed.
And Mr Ngoma confirmed that workers at the head office in Lusaka yesterday went on go-slow wanting to be addressed by management why the company was failing to pay them salaries. He also confirmed that management pleaded with the workers to resume work as they would be addressed through their union.
“We did talk to them so that they resume work and we assured them that they shall be addressed through the union,” Mr Ngoma said.
He also said that the workers in Copperbelt Province who had downed tools had resumed work as they would start getting their salaries.
