Statement On President Lungu’s Decision To Disengage KCM

May 18, 2019

Zambian DNA commends President Edgar Lungu for his decisive action to protect the country’s interests by disengaging the beleaguered Konkola Copper Mines (KCM).

We are elated that President Lungu announced the decision to disengage Vedanta Resources, the investor in KCM after holding consultative meetings with various stakeholders.

Further, the Head of State’s directive to the Attorney-General to commence legal proceedings to separate with KCM is a move meant  not only  to cement Government’s firmness on erring mining firms, but also a warning to other mining firms in a habit of arm-twisting Government in an effort to force to them to give in to their demands.

Indeed, it is unacceptable for the mining firms to fail to fulfill their promise to invest in the mining operations, yet continue to lay –off workers on the pretext of downsizing the labour force.
