Gov’t To Engage Millers Over Mealie Meal Prices

The Ministry of Agriculture will soon engage stakeholders in the maize value chain to discuss how best to address the high mealie meal prices.
Millers Association of Zambia -MAZ-President Andrew Chintala has disclosed this to ZNBC News in an interview saying the move follows the rise in the price of mealie meal.
And Mr Chintala has attributed high mealie meal prices to the high cost of maize on the market.
He said some farmers are also holding on to maize and this is affecting supply of the commodity on the market.
Mr Chintala noted that the best way of dealing with this situation in the long run is ensuring early distribution of inputs to increase maize production.
A 25-kilogram bag of breakfast mealie meal is now selling for between 125 Kwacha and 130 Kwacha.
Yesterday, President Edgar Lungu said government may be compelled to put up radical measures to normalise the escalating cost of mealie meal prices.
