Govt Admits Delayed Importation Of Power Due to Lack Of Funds

Government has finally admitted that the importation of 400 megawatts of power from South Africa to cushion the over 700 megawatts deficit has delayed due to lack of funds.

Chief government spokesperson Dora Siliya says after paying the US$10 million to Eskom of South Africa recently for the power deal, nothing has been paid further out of the required balance of us$32 million to import at least for two months.

Ms Siliya who is also information minister told journalists that the US$32 million balance to pay Eskom is being sourced locally from the Zambia revenue authority and the national pension scheme authority among other institutions.

She said government is making frantic efforts to secure the money and improve electricity supply.
And mines minister, Richard Musukwa said he is in talks with mining companies that have suspended and cut down on operations due to the power crisis.
