A31-YEAROLD woman of Chifubu Township in Ndola has delivered a baby weighing six kilogrammes through caesarean section. This a rare phenomenon which the Ndola Teaching Hospital has never recorded. The baby was born on Wednesday. Ndola Teaching Hospital public relations manager Sheona Kamwendo said in an interview yesterday that delivery was done through caesarean section because the child was too big to be born under normal conditions.
“It is rear that the hospital delivers babies as big as this one. Most babies the hospital delivers weigh 4.5 to 4.8 kilogrammes. That is why the baby was delivered through caesarean section,” she said. Ms Kamwendo said the mother, whose identity she withheld, has been under close observation by medical staff at the hospital from the time she was seven months pregnant. She said the condition of the baby and its mother is satisfactory and that the latter is able to speak.
Ms Kamwendo said the mother is appealing to wellwishers to help her in any way possible by providing things like baby milk. She said the clothes the mother bought are small for the baby, who has a huge appetite, the reason why the mother is appealing for baby milk. Ms Kamwendo said members of the public wishing to donate something to the mother can contact the hospital’s public relations office for guidance.
