Compare & Contrast – Police Treatment Of Call Outs On Chishimba Kambwili And Kaizar Zulu

CASE STUDY 1: Striking AVIC employees in Luanshya went to the home of their then member of parliament Dr Chishimba Kambwili. The workers went to his house to air their grievances over poor wages and lack of protective clothing. Dr Kambwili addressed the workers within his yard at his home.

The next day Dr. Kambwili was in Lusaka to attend a court hearing on another of the numerous court cases that the PF have lumped up on him.
Copperbelt police issued a call out to Kambwili while he was in Lusaka, they were to charge him with unlawful assembly.

Dr Kambwili, who always avails himself before the police requested that he avail himself to police the next day so that he could attend court in Lusaka and then drive back to the Copperbelt to be interrogated by police.

The police refused this request, they sent over 100 armed police to arrest Kambwili within the court precincts, bundled him into a police van, drove him to Luanshya and locked him up in jail for 3 days.

Two months later the state entered a nolle prosequie, they had no case to take to court as no crime was committed.

CASE STUDY 2: Kaizar Zulu while driving recklessly caused a major accident. He bashed a school bus with children aged two to twelve years old. He then assaulted the bus driver and broke his jaw and left him swollen, a medical report was obtained from Levy Mwanawasa Hospital confirming the same. Kaizar Zulu also unleashed his cadres on the driver, brandished his guns in front of frightened children and threatened further violence on the owner of the school. There were several eyewitness accounts to Zulu’s criminal conduct.

The police admitted that Kaizar Zulu was responsible for the accident from his reckless driving, they were also aware of the vicious assault and brandishing of guns.

It took the police two weeks to issue a call out to Kaizar Zulu and that is only due to public pressure, but even after they issued the call out Kaizar Zulu did not avail himself to Woodlands police, he ignored and disregarded the call out. The police know where Zulu lives, it’s only a 10 minute drive from Woodlands police station, they know where he works, infact State House Police could have retrieved him from his office if he was there.

But they took no action, they waited for 8 hours, he did not come. Finally a police officer came out to address waiting journalists that Kaizar Zulu was busy and they would try to interview him on Monday next week.

Now, can you see the difference?

Where there was no criminal case they sent 100 heavily armed officers just because it was Chishimba Kambwili.

But where there is a serious criminal case they treat it with kids gloves because it’s Kaizar Zulu.
