OVER 3,000 people in Luangwa have been screened for coronavirus, with all of them testing negative for the deadly disease. Officials at the health port screen at least 100 people every day as part of efforts to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in the country. Luangwa acting district health director Robert Mwale said health workers are ready to handle any coronavirus case.
Dr Mwale said this during the district development committee review meeting on the coronavirus sensitisation, preventive and adherence measures. “Our department is working with stakeholders and cooperating partners to intensify sensitisation and guidelines on coronavirus prevention measures,” Dr Mwale said.
He, however, said the Luangwa health port is yet to receive hand washing soap and other sanitary materials required in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. And Luangwa District Commissioner Ngoni Moyo called on heads of government departments in the area to ensure that the presidential guidelines on COVID-19 prevention are adhered to. Mr Moyo said various measures have been put in place to ensure that the presidential directives to prevent the further spread of the virus are followed to save lives. “Security wings have intensified patrols to ensure that the guidelines on coronavirus prevention are strictly followed,” Mr Moyo said. Luangwa District Business Association chairperson Felix Mulwanda thanked Government for being proactive in protecting lives of Luangwa residents and Zambians in general.
Mr Mulwanda said there is need to monitor movement of people entering and leaving the district using various points. “Traders from Kasumbalesa and other far areas come directly into Luangwa and this can endanger our lives. We need to put measures aimed at controlling such movements,” Mr Mulwanda said. Meanwhile, ChildFund Luangwa branch has donated K20,000 worth of fuel for public announcements and awareness programmes on COVID-19. ChildFund Luangwa branch chief executive officer Daniford Makayi said the organisation will help Government to safeguard people against the pandemic. Z
