Texila American University conducts Medical Screening Camp
(Lusaka, 8th June, 2020) – The Zambia Medical Association ZMA has commended Texila American University on their innovative approach to ensure their staff are granted health checks and provision of various incentives to help during the uncertain times of Covid – 19. ZMA president Dr Samson Chisele said incentives such as mealie meal and vitamin supplements among other items are a sure motivation for members of staff during the times of fluctuating prices of goods and services.
Speaking during the handover of the various items, Dr Chisele encouraged other medical institutions to emulate the example of Texila American University.
Speaking at the same event, Texila American University Dean of Medicine called on citizens to ensure that their health is a priority by building a culture of regular health checks and not only seek medical attention when they are sick, or dying.
Brigadier General Dr Lawson Simapuka stressed the need for preventative habits as people become more educated and empowered about their own health. He commended people who are preemptively seeking medical advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle. Dr Simapuka said the COVID – 19 pandemic has awakened people to strengthen their resolve towards individual healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and healthy food choices. He further highlighted the benefits of regular check-ups which include reduction in the risk of getting sick, detecting potentially life-threatening health conditions or diseases early, increase in chances for treatment and cure, limit of risk of complications by closely monitoring existing conditions, increased lifespan and improved health, among others.
Texila American University conducted a health camp through the support of Maina Soko Military Hospital for all its members of staff. Some of the tests conducted were red and white blood cell count, haemoglobin levels, kidney and liver functions as well as chest and lung tests. In addition, Texila American University handed over vitamin supplements and mealie-meal to all members of staff in an effort to emphasize the need for good nutrition.
