Contradiction: Minister of Home Affairs Says Police Bicycles Were Donated But Police IG Says They Were Procured

The Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified that the police bicycles meant for the Victim Support Unit (VSU) were a donation from the Japanese government.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs wishes to refute media speculations that Government has bought one thousand bicycles at a cost of U$ 700,000 breaking the cost of one bicycle to U$ 700.00…as fictitious, malicious and meant to mislead Zambians.

But Police IG has been quoted by radio Christian voice saying that the bicycles are par of a huge ongoing procurement.

Kakoma Kanganja says the Zambia Police service will in the coming months receive trucks, Ambulances, specialized vehicles for use by Criminal Investigations Department, Recovery Vehicles and Boats for the Marine Department.

Mr. Kanganja says all departments of the service will be adequately catered for.

He said that among the items procured include 100 bicycles which are meant for use by officers under the Victim Support Unit and the Community Services Division and not the 1, 000 bicycles as insinuated on social media.

He said that this will enable the officers respond to complaints in areas that are difficult to access by use of motor vehicles.
Mr. Kanganja said that the bicycles are one of the received from various stakeholders which are meant for effective policing.

He has therefore urged members of the public to support the work Government is doing for the men and women in uniform and avoid dragging the Zambia Police Service into politics.
