Mines Permanent Secretary, Barnaby Mulenga has reassured the country that Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) is not going ahead to place the mine under care and maintenance.
He says Government is currently in talks with MCM management on issues surrounding the operations of the mine.
But unions in the mining sector are divided on the future of MCM.
Mine Workers Union of Zambia MUZ President, Joseph Chewe has instead advised Government to take over MCM’s operations claiming that Glencore is currently diversifying its business away from copper mining.
But the United Mine Workers Union of Zambia UMUZ feels Mopani is sincere and will continue with mining activities beyond July 31st, 2020.
