The elephant was airlifted to safety in Proflight’s 56-seat Dash 8 aircraft, flying from Mfuwe to Lusaka with 40 tourists on board and then onward by road to the GRI Lilayi Elephant Nursery that was featured in the movie starring Kristen Davis and Rob Lowe released on Netflix this month.
The one-year-old elephant, which weighs around 200kg, was named Olimba mtima – which means ‘strong heart’ – and given her own boarding pass by Proflight as she was loaded into the rear cargo hold of the plane.
After a smooth landing at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport from Mfuwe, Proflight Zambia Captain Walter Nhliziyo said: “I am very happy to play an important role in transporting the elephant calf safely to Lusaka. I love the idea of taking care of our nature and wildlife. We have tourists within and outside the country coming to view our wildlife in the National Parks; it’s important that we take care of it. I look forward to seeing Olimba mtima.”
The airline also thanked Zambia Airports Corporation (ZACL) for its support in facilitating the airlift.
It was less than a week since the rescue mission when GRI and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife were called to respond to yet another tragic elephant orphaning. DNPW Rangers came across this tragic scene: a mother elephant agonisingly caught around the neck in a poacher’s snare and bearing three life-threatening gunshot wounds. Standing under her chin, her 1-year-old calf stood in terror after the traumatic experience of being shot at and running for her life.
Tragically, her mother was too injured to be saved and had to be put out of her suffering. This traumatised little calf was darted with sedative and carefully moved with the help of Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) and DNPW staff to Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust (CWET), which have been a long-term first response for orphaned elephants and other wildlife in need.
The GRI vet unit were onsite to help stabilise the calf as they coordinate the logistics to relocate her to the Lilayi Elephant Nursery where she will be united with other elephants.
DNPW senior wildlife vet Dr Innocent Billy N’gombwa said: “Thank you to Proflight for the great job they are doing to save wildlife. It wouldn’t have been easy to transport the elephant calf on the road due to high stress.
“We are trying to give this calf a chance to live by rehabilitating it to an elephant orphanage based in Lusaka called Lilayi Elephant Nursery under Game Rangers International GRI.
“We are transporting it using air transportation with Proflight Zambia. Flying the calf to Lusaka will guarantee us to get it there as soon as possible and reduce stress on the elephant.”
The Netflix conservation film Holiday In the Wild tells the story of a young orphaned elephant calf’s rescue. GRI has rescued 49 elephant calves to date, and most have been found wandering alone, starving and distressed.
“Having been with her mother up to the bitter end she is in good physical condition, but is incredibly traumatised, frightened and confused having lost her mother and her herd due to the incessant and insatiable demand for ivory! Having lost her mother in such a brutal manner this level of anxiety is to be expected. However, she is now feeding well, and seems reassured by her carers’ presence,” said GRI.
“An elephant mother invests nearly two years in producing a calf so they do not readily abandon them. The dramatic rise in illegal ivory poaching and a variety of human-elephant conflict issues are the main cause of orphaned elephants across Africa,”
GRI works closely with the Department of National Parks & Wildlife and communities living on the edge national parks to support rural sustainable livelihoods, elephant conflict mitigations and conservation education, in addition to bolstering the law enforcement capabilities in the area to actively protect elephants and all the wildlife within the National Park and its surrounding protected areas.
On the same flight a tourist from London, Inam Patel, was impressed with the care and consideration Zambia is giving to wildlife.
“I came to Zambia for a safari from London. And I am now flying back. I love nature and wildlife and seeing so much care for the young elephant indicates the reason why we come here, to see wildlife and nature.”

]]>Dr Chipoma was speaking yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on Siavonga District Commissioner Lovemore Kanyama at his office. “Our drivers are now able to collect licences in 20 minutes or less following the upgrade of the system and enhanced operations at our stations. “We also want to reduce the time it takes for people to pay road tax to enhance movement of goods and services,” Dr Chipoma said. He said enhanced service delivery in the agency’s operations is key in promoting socio-economic development. Dr Chipoma also said RTSA has heightened road safety education to reduce road carnage countrywide.
“The President (Edgar Lungu) is concerned about the high number of road fatalities caused by bad behaviour and human error by motorists. “There is need, therefore, for a multi-sectoral approach by all stakeholders in the transport sector to curb accidents and save lives,” Dr Chipoma said. He said road safety is a duty of every citizens, adding that the task should not be left to RTSA alone. And Mr Kanyama urged RTSA officers in the district to increase road patrols to control reckless driving.
“We welcome the presidential directive that vehicles without seat belts should not be allowed to be on the roads. “However, we appeal to RTSA to send another vehicle here so that our [RTSA] officers can intensify patrols especially in the night to curb illegality,” Mr Kanyama said. He is concerned about the trend by some motorists to ferry passengers in open vans despite repeated calls by Government not to do so.

]]>This is in a case Nshinka Kaputo,35, is facing one count of murdering his former girlfriend Precious Mangesana and another count of an act intended to cause grievous harm. It is alleged that on October 5, 2017, Kaputo shot dead Ms Mangesana, a MultiChoice employee of Meanwood in Lusaka. Further, it is alleged that on the same date, Kaputo shot his two-yearold daughter in the neck.
In April last year, Kaputo appeared before Lusaka High Court Judge Catherine Phiri and denied the charge. At trial, the court heard that the accused shot his ex-lover while fighting for the custody of his daughter, who in the process also got injured. The court also heard that Kaputo was allegedly a jealousy lover who once threatened to kill the victim. But in his defence, the accused claimed that Mangesana allegedly shot herself and that he can never injure a daughter he loves so dearly.
And when the matter came up for continued defence yesterday, Kaputo’s lawyer told the court that his client will not bring witnesses and that he wished to close his defence. In the earlier sitting in August this year, during his defence, Kaputo informed the court that he would call five witnesses. “The matter was supposed to come up for continued defence.
However, after viewing the evidence, I ‘m advised that he (Kaputo) does not intend to call witnesses and so he is closing defence,” the lawyer said. Judge Phiri then ordered the State to file written submissions by November 29 and the defence to file theirs by December 19 this year. The court set January

The 39-year-old mother of four appeared with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe on The Real on Tuesday (Nov.5) and opened up about her ‘fights’ with her 42-year-old husband over his religious journey.
When asked if she supports her the husband’s new spiritual life journey, she replied: ‘I do think that, you know, he is my husband.
‘So, I obviously want to honor him and what he’s feeling. And he’s been going through this life change, and it’s mostly about the kids.’
Kim also revealed that Kanye even went as far as removing the TVs in kids’ rooms, as he has become increasingly cautious about the type of imagery that is in their home.
Kim explained: ‘We got rid of TVs in the kids’ rooms and removed makeup from North’s room – and he’s been very… had this, you know, epiphany of being this – not that he wasn’t an amazing dad – but being a little bit more strict as a dad and being very forceful on the imagery that’s in our household and what they see.
According to her, such drastic measures are good for their children but it has been difficult for her to take.
The reality star explained: ‘But I’m always gonna be me… and so, we had that discussion and that fight.’
She said: ‘I think, at the end of the day that’s what marriage is. He’s gonna do things that I don’t agree with, and I support him, and vice versa.
‘So, with this, it was like we were like just having this conversation of what is too much and I am a mother of four, like, I am gonna be forty next year, like, when is it time to…’
This comes days Kanye West banned their six-year-old daughter North from wearing make-up and crop tops for same reason.

LIB reported earlier that the movie Genevieve Nnaji made her directorial debut in, was disqualified as Nigeria’s submission for the ‘International Feature Film’ category of the Oscars for having too much English dialogue.
Reacting to the development, Chineze Anyaene who headed the committee that made the submission said it should be an eye-opener for filmmakers in the Nollywood industry.
Though she admitted that the industry is “often faced with producing films with a wide reach”, she also disclosed that they are working to create workshops and other training sessions to instill robust awareness on the guidelines for an ‘International Feature Film’ entry.
She said “The budding Nigerian film industry is often faced with producing films with wide reach which often makes the recording dialogue predominantly English with non-English infusions in some cases. Going forward, the committee intends to submit films which are predominantly foreign language – non-English recording dialogue,” Anyaene said.
“We are therefore urging filmmakers to shoot with the intention of non-English recording dialogue as a key qualifying parameter to represent the country in the most prestigious award.
“The committee is working tirelessly in organizing workshops, seminars and using other available media to create robust awareness on the guidelines and requirements for an International Feature Film Entry.
“Lionheart passed on other technical requirements from the story, to sound and picture except for language as adjudged by the Academy screening matrix, which was a challenge for the committee at a time. This is an eye-opener and a step forward into growing a better industry.”

One of the women, who is 34, only discovered she was pregnant when she had a medical scan after complaining of stomach pains.
The mother superior, whose age is not known, is based at an institute that helps “fallen women and their children.”
A church source in Rome said: “There is consternation at this news. It appears that both women were back in their home nations and obviously had some form of sexual encounter.
STRICT RULES OF CHASTITY
“An investigation has been launched. They both breached strict rules of chastity but the welfare of their children is uppermost.
“The most likely outcome is they will leave their religious service.”
One of the women is based in Ragusa and the other less than 40 miles away in Militello. Its mayor Salvatore Riotta said the news has “left our village shocked . . . but should have been kept quiet”.
Pope Francis admitted earlier this year that some nuns had been sexually abused by clerics.

]]>First and foremost I wish to remind you brethren that the Seventh- day Adventist church has prided itself over the years for being among the most organized institutions on the face of the earth.
With the guidance of scriptures, Spirit of Prophecy and official organizational documents such as the church manual, policy and various administrative instruments, the church remains compact and resolute in its structure and mission.
Coming to the issue…
Some have inquired if the church was right to adorn the first lady in the sanctimonious Dorcas uniform, while others have blatantly accused the church leadership of compromising church policy and succumbing to the lure of material or political favours.
Before we talk about evangelism and the need to embrace people of all classes, the simple question to ask is, what do our books say about such matters?
Dorcas as a society under the garb of Adventist Community services operates under what is known as Dorcas Guidelines. This is the document that spells out rules, procedures and guidelines on all penitent issues pertaining this beautiful group of women.
Contrary to popular opinion, Dorcas Guidelines allow the wearing of Dorcas uniform by individuals who are not bonafide members of Dorcas and not members of the Adventist church. “Non Seventh day Adventists who take part in the group activities may wear the service uniform while working with the group” Guidelines state.
The Guidlines also emphasize that when such happens the person must respect our standards regarding dress, jewelry and makeup. A closer look at the viral photo goes to show that this aspect was aptly complied with by the first lady, Mrs Esther Lungu.
What about the news about Dr. Akombwa?
What about it? You ask. The accusation levelled against the church about the Dorcas uniform also bullied the church leader into it. Some news outlets have claimed that Pastor Akombwa received a sum from State House in order to dress the Mrs Esther Lungu in Dorcas uniform.
Sincerity here begs for further probing. How did Dr. Akombwa dress the first lady with the uniform? Did he or his executive at Southern Zambia Union organize that event?
Contrary, the photo was captured during SDA Woodlands Central Church Exhibition at Nakatindi Hall grounds at Lusaka Civic Centre on Sunday, November 3rd,2019 were as Dr. Akombwa was also a guest by virtue of his position as leader of the church and the guest of honor.
Those of you who have been around will recall that “this was not the first time the First Lady was putting on Dorcas uniform. She did put it on in Kabwe, probably in 2017 when she was invited as Guest of Honor to officially open the meeting.
Since Kabwe is not part of Southern Zambia Inion Conference, he was not in attendance. But no one ever reacted to her wearing the uniform. So, why does it become an issue when she does the same in the SZBU, especially in view of the fact that our Manuals provide for non-Adventists to wear them?
Maybe we must admit that we are in the midst of a political crossfire. Whatever our church leaders do or don’t do, there will be someone out there who will find the position against them. Probably, we must be abit patient, gentle and prayerful towards our church leaders.
Nonetheless, mission to all classes of people, those in the highways and byways, including those in government, must be done. This is because they part of our mission field as a church.
“We talk and write much of the neglected poor: should not some attention be given also to the neglected rich? Many look upon this class as hopeless, and they do little to open the eyes of those who have lost eternity out of their reckoning.
Thousands of wealthy men have gone to their graves unwarned, because they have been judged by appearance, and passed by as hopeless subjects. But, indifferent as they may appear, but most of this class are soul burdened” Evangelism page 555.

]]>On Friday last week, Secretary to the Cabinet Simon Miti revealed that a recent government payroll clean-up exercise on the Copperbelt established that about 4,000 civil servants were unaccounted for. Dr Miti also said about K60 million was being lost through fraudulent management of the payroll system on the Copperbelt. PSMD Permanent Secretary Boniface Chimbwali said in an interview yesterday that the 4,000 bogus workers will not have access to salaries this month.
“The 4,000 ghost workers Over 4,000 ghost accounts frozen whom Secretary to the Cabinet referred to in our meeting have a component of genuine government workers who have gone to work elsewhere without leaving a trace of authorisation. “The civil service is a big and complex institution, some could be working elsewhere and even getting paid but are not on the Copperbelt, where they are supposed to be,” he said. Mr Chimbwali said now that the salary accounts have been frozen, genuine civil servants will come out to state why they are working from different stations without authority.
He said those with genuine reasons will have their accounts unfrozen and others may be required to get back to their original work stations. Mr Chimbwali said the cleaning up of the payroll system will be extended to other provinces. “Copperbelt was the first and the exercise will be extended to other provinces, but we will not tell you our next stop.
It is our secret because if we tell you, we will be alerting the culprits,” he said. Mr Chimbwali appealed to civil servants working in areas they are not supposed to be working from to have their issues normalised to avoid being inconvenienced. “Some civil servants have genuine reasons for leaving their work stations such as medical issues and we normalise situations in such instances,” he said.
Mr Chimbwali said as Government does the roll call of civil servants, it will ensure that it does so with a human face so that those with genuine reasons are not negatively affected. And Mr Chimbwali said action will be taken against civil servants who will be found to be earning more than what they are supposed to. He said Government has started scrutinising people who should have access to the payroll to avoid such anomalies. “When one is promoted and a salary is increased, the change will be effected by the commission (Public Service Commission) and not the ministry. “It’s a huge shift with user rights which will help stop abuse of government resources,” Mr Chimbwali said
