Research Links Pork To Increase Of Epilepsy Cases In Zambia http://www.tumfweko.com/2015/09/24/research-links-pork-to-increase-of-epilepsy-cases-in-zambia/ http://www.tumfweko.com/2015/09/24/research-links-pork-to-increase-of-epilepsy-cases-in-zambia/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2015 18:51:52 +0000 http://www.tumfweko.com/?p=40622 A researcher conducted by the University Of Zambia School of Veterinary Medicine has attributed the increase in epilepsy cases in the country to consumption of pork that contains tapeworm.

The Research has also found that humans acquire the adult tapeworm by eating infected undercooked pork meat leading to taeniosis, while pigs acquire the infection by eating hymn graces from an adult pork tapeworm carrier.

Dr. Kabemba Mwape from the University Of Zambia School of Veterinary Medicine Department of Clinical Studies, says there is need to recognize the parasite as an important health problem that needs concerted efforts to fight so that the suffering of people with epilepsy could be abated.

Speaking during the second Research and Science media briefing in Lusaka today, Dr. Mwape has since called for a multi-sectoral approach involving the Ministry of Health, Veterinary and local communities to ensure that they work together in controlling the parasite in pigs and also in humans.

According to the report adult pork tapeworm infection in humans in Zambia is reported to range from 6 to 12 percent while in pigs its about 9 to 34 percent by world standards.

Dr. Mwape notes that this high prevalence of pork tapeworm infections in both pigs and humans shows that there is urgent need to identify the importance of the parasite as a cause of acquired epilepsy in the country.

And UNZA Acting Vice Chancellor Enala Tembo says Research and Science form a control Engine to development and the knowledge economy of many countries like Zambia.

Professor Tembo says it is for this reason that the University of Zambia has created an enabling environment for research activities by coming up with a research and intellectual properties rights policy to ensure that research outputs feed into national development, enhance teaching and curricula development at the University.

She has since advised students to carry out research in the areas of basic science and applied sciences to meet the developmental needs of the country, and the African continent at large

Erin Solari recorded her grandfather Howard Serena, 92, singing “You’ll Never Know” by Rosemary Clooney and Harry James to his wife Laura, 93, on Sept. 12. Laura currently suffers from dementia.
“We knew that this was probably the last time, so we wanted to capture that moment,” Solari told ABC News today. “It was really loving.
“For me, right after the video, I was so overcome,” Solari added. “I broke down and started crying. I was so happy that I’d captured this moment for my family. It touched me, so it doesn’t surprise me that it touched other people as well.”
The elderly couple have nine children and 18 grandchildren. They’ve been married for 73 years.
Solari’s heart-warming video was a hit on social media.
“It [the video] was posted minutes after it happened on Facebook and it had over 3 million views,” she said. “I know it seems private, but my family is very proud and happy to share this love with the world. As for the feedback, all the love and support we’ve gotten, being around my grandmother, I believe it maybe it had a little bit of an impact of her feeling better. She’s been able to go home and we are very appreciative of that as well.”
After being told the video had gone viral, Laura remarked:
“I told you Howard that I’d make you famous.”

The Nigerian military rescued 241 women and children in a raid on two camps controlled by the Boko Haram terrorist group, the country’s military said Wednesday.

The Tuesday operation unfolded in the villages of Jangurori and Bulatori, the statement said.

The operations also netted the arrests of 43 militants belonging to the Islamist group, including a local leader, Bulama Modu, who the Nigerian military says was acting as the “emir” of the village of Bulakuri.

The raids destroyed both camps, army spokesman Col. Sani Usman told Punch, a Nigerian newspaper. The military also confiscated weapons, some of which were buried by militants who appeared to be abandoning their posts during the raid, he told the paper.

“Apart from arms and ammunitions, bows and arrows recovered from Bulama Modu, the kingpin, he confirmed that the terrorists also gave him a horse to enhance his deadly pursuits,” Usman told Punch.

Troops also arrested a suspected militant in Wudla village who provided the names of terrorists who helped stage an attack in northern Cameroon this month, Usman said. They hailed from Dara Jamel, where the insurgents operate a bomb factory, he told Punch.

Police Warn Cadres, 9 Arrested During Campaigns http://www.tumfweko.com/2015/09/24/police-warn-cadres-9-arrested-during-campaigns/ http://www.tumfweko.com/2015/09/24/police-warn-cadres-9-arrested-during-campaigns/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2015 11:24:58 +0000 http://www.tumfweko.com/?p=40614 Police have warned that anyone perpetrating violence in today’s Lubansenshi and Solwezi West Parliamentary by-elections will be dealt with sternly.
Meanwhile, nine people have been arrested during the period of campaigns in Lubansenshi Constituency in Luwingu District, Northern Province.
The warning comes in the wake of confusion in Lubansenshi Constituency where UPND cadres led by party vice-president Geoffrey Mwamba used pepper spray on Patriotic Front (PF) supporters at Luwingu main market on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said anyone opting to carry out any form of electoral violence prior, during and after the voting day would be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the provisions of the law.In a statement released in Lusaka yesterday, Ms Chanda said Police had reinforced manpower in both constituencies and stepped up patrols to handle any volatile situation that might arise.
Voters in Lubansenshi and those in Solwezi West would be going to the polls today to elect new members of parliament.
The campaigns had generally been peaceful save for a few incidences particularly in Lubansenshi where gangs from rival political parties fought amid gunshots in Luwingu resulting in the injury of one person on Tuesday, this week.
“We would also like to assure the electorate in the two constituencies that officers will be at hand to ensure that they exercise their democratic right freely without any form of intimidation or threats.
“We expect all political parties to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner and that Police officers will receive maximum cooperation from all the stakeholders during and after the by-elections,” Ms Chanda said.
Ms Chanda urged members of the public to report anyone suspected of abrogating the provisions of the electoral code of conduct to the nearest Police officer or electoral stakeholder.
A group of UPND cadres led by Mr Mwamba unleashed the pepper spray at a group of youths that were found dancing to PF campaign songs at Luwingu main market.
The incident occurred when Mr Mwamba widely known as GBM, and his group strayed into an area where a PF campaign truck for the Lubansenshi parliamentary by-election was playing party anthems.
The former Kasama Central MP stuck out his head from the confines of the car he was in and booed at a group of youths that were dancing to the songs.
He was, however, met with a rude shock as the youths mostly from the surrounding areas booed him back with some shouting that he was too old to be exchanging words with them.
The youths picked up stones and pelted the UPND entourage forcing one of the opposition party members to unleash pepper stray at the growing crowd to allow them beat a hasty retreat.
Acting Northern Province Police Chief Luckson Sakala said officers had been to the area to verify the fracas but calm had returned by the time the police Land Cruiser laden with officers arrived at the market.
“It’s normal to have such happenings during election campaigns. The situation is calm as officers were sent to verify the report,” he said.
Mr Sakala also revealed that nine people had been arrested during the campaign period with others already appearing in court.
Two of the nine had been charged with illegal possession of a fire arm, one for unlawful possession of national registration and voter’s cards and six for assault.
Apart from the PF who were fielding George Mwamba in Lubansenshi and UPND’s Patrick Mucheleka, the Lubasenshi seat is also being contested by MMD’s Gabriel Mulenga and Daniel Mubanga of Rainbow Party while Charles Chimumbwa is contesting as an independent.
Three candidates are vying for the Solwezi West seat and they are Martin Mbaya of PF, John Njombi of UNIP and UPND’s Teddy Kasonso.

Pastor Hendrick Ramahlo ate poisoned food and had to be rushed to hospital, where his intestine was found to be damaged.

Now he has a colostomy bag which eliminates his waste through a tube in his stomach.

Apparently, soon after he ate at the funeral, his eyes became swollen and his stomach stopped working.

Doctors at Polokwane Provincial Hospital told him he had been poisoned.

“I decided to eat separately from the main table. The food was delicious but little did I know I was changing my life for good. Soon afterwards, I vomited, went partially blind and my stomach stopped functioning.”

“I was first rushed to Kgapane Hospital and later transferred to Polokwane. They had to remove part of my intestine. I now have to have a colostomy bag to collect both my kak and my urine. This is very difficult as the bags cost R21 500 a pack.”

A senior church member said there was fighting over positions in the church and this could have been linked to the poisoning.

Zambian’s Should Not Blame Govt Over The Current Economic Problems -Mwali http://www.tumfweko.com/2015/09/24/zambians-should-not-blame-govt-over-the-current-economic-problems-mwali/ http://www.tumfweko.com/2015/09/24/zambians-should-not-blame-govt-over-the-current-economic-problems-mwali/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2015 09:58:05 +0000 http://www.tumfweko.com/?p=40601 TRANSPORT, Works, Supply and Communications Deputy Minister Mutaba Mwali says it will be naïve for anybody to attribute the country’s current economic problems to mismanagement by the Government.
Dr Mwali said there was need for everyone to admit that while the country was facing challenges, the problems were not peculiar to Zambia alone.
He said Zambia was affected by the downturn in China’s economy given that the Asian country was among the biggest players and Zambia’s major market for copper.
Dr Mwali was speaking in Lilongwe yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on Zambia’s High Commissioner to Malawi Salome Mwananshiku in Lilongwe.
This is according to a statement released yesterday by First Secretary for press at the Zambian Embassy in Lilongwe Chansa Kabwela.
The deputy minister is in Malawi to attend a one-day meeting under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) over the development of water transport in the region.
“It will be naïve of anybody of a sound mind to attribute the current problems in the country to economic mismanagement by the Patriotic Front Government.
“The same problems we have in Zambia are being felt by other countries in the region, on the continent and outside the continent. We are feeling the effects of the economic problems in China and unfortunately our partners in the mining industry rush to laying off workers whenever the price of copper drops,” he said.
Dr Mwali attributed the power deficit to Zambia’s overdependence on hydro energy over the years as well as last year’s poor rainfall pattern which saw water levels reduce in the Kariba Dam and other rivers in the country.
However, Dr Mwali assured that the Government was actively working to address the problems people were facing such as importing electricity from Mozambique to mitigate the power crisis.
He wondered how the drop in the currency or the falling copper prices could be attributed to alleged mismanagement by Government when many other copper producing countries were feeling the effects of the slump.
The meeting in Lilongwe involved Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique and sought to look at the results of a feasibility study that was commissioned over the navigability of the Shire Zambezi Waterway.
