The elephant was airlifted to safety in Proflight’s 56-seat Dash 8 aircraft, flying from Mfuwe to Lusaka with 40 tourists on board and then onward by road to the GRI Lilayi Elephant Nursery that was featured in the movie starring Kristen Davis and Rob Lowe released on Netflix this month.
The one-year-old elephant, which weighs around 200kg, was named Olimba mtima – which means ‘strong heart’ – and given her own boarding pass by Proflight as she was loaded into the rear cargo hold of the plane.
After a smooth landing at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport from Mfuwe, Proflight Zambia Captain Walter Nhliziyo said: “I am very happy to play an important role in transporting the elephant calf safely to Lusaka. I love the idea of taking care of our nature and wildlife. We have tourists within and outside the country coming to view our wildlife in the National Parks; it’s important that we take care of it. I look forward to seeing Olimba mtima.”
The airline also thanked Zambia Airports Corporation (ZACL) for its support in facilitating the airlift.
It was less than a week since the rescue mission when GRI and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife were called to respond to yet another tragic elephant orphaning. DNPW Rangers came across this tragic scene: a mother elephant agonisingly caught around the neck in a poacher’s snare and bearing three life-threatening gunshot wounds. Standing under her chin, her 1-year-old calf stood in terror after the traumatic experience of being shot at and running for her life.
Tragically, her mother was too injured to be saved and had to be put out of her suffering. This traumatised little calf was darted with sedative and carefully moved with the help of Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) and DNPW staff to Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust (CWET), which have been a long-term first response for orphaned elephants and other wildlife in need.
The GRI vet unit were onsite to help stabilise the calf as they coordinate the logistics to relocate her to the Lilayi Elephant Nursery where she will be united with other elephants.
DNPW senior wildlife vet Dr Innocent Billy N’gombwa said: “Thank you to Proflight for the great job they are doing to save wildlife. It wouldn’t have been easy to transport the elephant calf on the road due to high stress.
“We are trying to give this calf a chance to live by rehabilitating it to an elephant orphanage based in Lusaka called Lilayi Elephant Nursery under Game Rangers International GRI.
“We are transporting it using air transportation with Proflight Zambia. Flying the calf to Lusaka will guarantee us to get it there as soon as possible and reduce stress on the elephant.”
The Netflix conservation film Holiday In the Wild tells the story of a young orphaned elephant calf’s rescue. GRI has rescued 49 elephant calves to date, and most have been found wandering alone, starving and distressed.
“Having been with her mother up to the bitter end she is in good physical condition, but is incredibly traumatised, frightened and confused having lost her mother and her herd due to the incessant and insatiable demand for ivory! Having lost her mother in such a brutal manner this level of anxiety is to be expected. However, she is now feeding well, and seems reassured by her carers’ presence,” said GRI.
“An elephant mother invests nearly two years in producing a calf so they do not readily abandon them. The dramatic rise in illegal ivory poaching and a variety of human-elephant conflict issues are the main cause of orphaned elephants across Africa,”
GRI works closely with the Department of National Parks & Wildlife and communities living on the edge national parks to support rural sustainable livelihoods, elephant conflict mitigations and conservation education, in addition to bolstering the law enforcement capabilities in the area to actively protect elephants and all the wildlife within the National Park and its surrounding protected areas.
On the same flight a tourist from London, Inam Patel, was impressed with the care and consideration Zambia is giving to wildlife.
“I came to Zambia for a safari from London. And I am now flying back. I love nature and wildlife and seeing so much care for the young elephant indicates the reason why we come here, to see wildlife and nature.”

]]>He says President Lungu has “annihilated” everything that late PF founder and fifth Republican president Michael Sata championed.
“…Lungu duped me – like he duped many Zambians – that he was humble and that he was going to listen to all his colleagues. He was playing his cards smart, not knowing that things will be hot in Zambia,” Kalaba said.
He said he foresees someone being arrested in future over the Presidential Empowerment Fund, an initiative of President Lungu.
Speaking on Prime TV’s ‘Oxygen of Democracy’ programme on Monday night, Kalaba said President Lungu had worked hard to undermine the peace of Zambia.
He observed that Zambia was more divided now than when Lungu took over the presidency in January 2015.
“The President is battling a lot of fears within him because he has seen now that the ground is hot for him,” Kalaba said.
“I want to thank God for those who are asking him to be a sole candidate in the PF. Let him be a sole candidate in the PF so that we can tell the Zambian people that there will be no third term. There will be no third term in this country! We’ll not allow a third term. He has gone ahead to acquire a third term and he wants to silence all of us! Unfortunately, it will not work – we are going to stand in his way.”
He said the President’s powers were not absolute.
“The President’s authority is always in check. But unfortunately for our President now, maybe he has been misled into thinking that he’s got all the powers. He doesn’t have! He remains a citizen of this country bound by the laws that we have in this country. Whatever he is doing, when he leaves, it will follow him,” Kalaba said.
The opposition leader noted that President Lungu’s attendance of president Sata’s fifth memorial service last Monday was mere mockery.
He said when he recently saw senior PF officials at the memorial service in Lusaka, he told himself that they were remembering: “a man that they have betrayed heavily.”
“They have totally moved away from what he was pursuing – they are pursuing their own things. When people want to pretend that they love Michael Sata, a man that they have completely managed to annihilate what he stood for, it is totally sad. Sata loved the poor [but] today Zambian entrepreneurs are languishing. Everything that Mr Sata stood for has been obliterated and sadly so,” Kalaba lamented.
“Mr Lungu has obliterated everything that Mr Sata stood for. So, even for him to go there [memorial service]…. That’s why maybe he didn’t even go to the graveyard to put flowers. He doesn’t go to put flowers there; he only ends up at church and goes back to his home.”
He said he did not know the reason the President was averse to laying wreathes on Sata’s grave.
“He doesn’t want to put flowers at Mr Sata’s resting place. Maybe he knows that he has betrayed the man and it is true. President Lungu does not believe in what Michael Sata stood for!” Kalaba stressed.
He further said President Lungu: “duped me – like he duped many Zambians – that he was humble and that he was going to listen to all his colleagues.”
“He was playing his cards smart, not knowing that things will be hot in Zambia. Things are hot now in Zambia! When I realised that Sata’s vision was being betrayed, I said I cannot be part of this,” Kalaba said.
On the implementation of the Presidential Empowerment Fund (PEF), Kalaba, a former foreign affairs minister, said somebody in future might be arrested.
He said the government had an expenditure trail.
“I have been in the civil service for 10 years and I know how government money works,” Kalaba said.
“The beneficiaries of those monies (PEF) are PF cadres. They will go to the market and say ‘are you going to vote for Mr Edgar Lungu’ and give out money to PF cadres. That money is being dispensed in a partisan way. So we’ll see where that Fund will end. But it is regrettable that it’s being disbursed in such fashion. Mr President, when you have a presidential fund, let it be inclusive.”
On the topical issue of an impending mining project in the Lower Zambezi National Park, where his name has been mentioned, Kalaba explained that there was a lot of ignorance around the matter.
He added that many people were adding their voice on the matter only because: “others are speaking.”
“But I can tell you that if people can read what I read, be privy to the information that is on the ground…. They should be careful because there are several stakeholders involved in this Lower Zambezi. It’s not just the environmentalists,” Kalaba said.
“President Lungu went into the Lower Zambezi and assured the chiefs that mining in the Lower Zambezi will go on. It’s on record! Have you heard him comment on this issue? We are waiting for him to comment! He (President Lungu) was Minister of Defence – he went there.”
Kalaba, however, indicated that it was difficult for him to: “speak about my elder brother Mr Hakainde Hichilema and his role in the Lower Zambezi.”
“But what I can confirm to you is that even when I was Minister [of Lands, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection], his name never appeared in any of those documents I was reading. Truth be told, I never saw his name anywhere! I’m just reading it [now] in the press; maybe they have information I don’t have,” he explained.
Over the police teargassing of the DP vision launch in Samfya on Saturday, Kalaba reiterated that: “the truth of the matter is that the President himself, because he has become so insecure, called Luapula Province commissioner of police Elias Chushi and said ‘this rally will not take off.’”
“They fired teargas because President Lungu told them to do that. I’m supremely confident because my intelligence told me that he (President Lungu) called Chushi directly and told him ‘nge ifyo naumfwa (what about this I’m hearing?) Can you cancel it!’” said Kalaba.
“We’ll go back [to Samfya] and have that rally because this country is for everybody. PF cannot be the referee in this game; it is also an interested party. PF is finished!”

He said enhanced service delivery in the agency’s operations is key in promoting socio-economic development. Dr Chipoma also said RTSA has heightened road safety education to reduce road carnage countrywide.
“The President (Edgar Lungu) is concerned about the high number of road fatalities caused by bad behaviour and human error by motorists. “There is need, therefore, for a multi-sectoral approach by all stakeholders in the transport sector to curb accidents and save lives,” Dr Chipoma said. He said road safety is a duty of every citizens, adding that the task should not be left to RTSA alone. And Mr Kanyama urged RTSA officers in the district to increase road patrols to control reckless driving.
“We welcome the presidential directive that vehicles without seat belts should not be allowed to be on the roads. “However, we appeal to RTSA to send another vehicle here so that our [RTSA] officers can intensify patrols especially in the night to curb illegality,” Mr Kanyama said. He is concerned about the trend by some motorists to ferry passengers in open vans despite repeated calls by Government not to do so.

]]>CSPR Programs Manager Chimuka Nachibinga says government efforts to distribute relief maize remains inadequate with many affected areas still faced with worse hunger situations than before.
And on social protection programs, Mr. Nachibinga says cspr welcomes calls by community development and social services minister Kampamba Chewe for president Lungu to allow between 0 to 10 percent of toll fees collected in the country to go towards social protection programs including the social cash transfer.
He notes that judging by revelations that national road fund agency made over K400 million above its target last year and the reduced percentage of social protection allocation in the 2020 national budget from the 2019 national budget, it is justifiable to add other sources of funding to increase the number of beneficiaries of social cash transfer and other social protection services.
The 2020 national budget shows a 0.1 percent reduction of the social protection allocation from 2.5 percent of the total 2019 national budget to 2.4 percent proposed in the 2020 budget.

]]>This is in a case Nshinka Kaputo,35, is facing one count of murdering his former girlfriend Precious Mangesana and another count of an act intended to cause grievous harm. It is alleged that on October 5, 2017, Kaputo shot dead Ms Mangesana, a MultiChoice employee of Meanwood in Lusaka. Further, it is alleged that on the same date, Kaputo shot his two-yearold daughter in the neck.
In April last year, Kaputo appeared before Lusaka High Court Judge Catherine Phiri and denied the charge. At trial, the court heard that the accused shot his ex-lover while fighting for the custody of his daughter, who in the process also got injured. The court also heard that Kaputo was allegedly a jealousy lover who once threatened to kill the victim. But in his defence, the accused claimed that Mangesana allegedly shot herself and that he can never injure a daughter he loves so dearly.
And when the matter came up for continued defence yesterday, Kaputo’s lawyer told the court that his client will not bring witnesses and that he wished to close his defence. In the earlier sitting in August this year, during his defence, Kaputo informed the court that he would call five witnesses. “The matter was supposed to come up for continued defence.
However, after viewing the evidence, I ‘m advised that he (Kaputo) does not intend to call witnesses and so he is closing defence,” the lawyer said. Judge Phiri then ordered the State to file written submissions by November 29 and the defence to file theirs by December 19 this year. The court set January
