THE noose is tightening on former President Rupiah Banda’s son Henry, following Inspector-General of Police Martin Malama’s disclosure that international law agencies have now been involved in bringing him to book, by all means possible.
“On that issue I can safely say Interpol and SARPCO (Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation) who are highly skilled, are now working hand in hand to bring the matter to a close. I think we will report some progress very soon, because Interpol and SARPCO are working together on it,” Dr Malama said.
In December, then Information Minister Given Lubinda advised Henry to stop running and hand himself to police because in Zambia, everybody is innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
Henry’s name has been linked to RP Capital, the company that according to the Sebastian Zulu-led probe team, grossly undervalued Zamtel by stating that it was worth only about US$18 million when in fact the book value was more than US$80 million and the market value will be in excess of US$5 billion in two years’ time.
The probe team has recommended that the transaction reported to have been put together by Henry and outspoken Petauke member of Parliament Dora Siliya, be reversed and all top directors and senior managers be sacked.
Wafik Alshater, the LAPGreen chairman, was expected in the country on Wednesday night but he did not show up as he plans to hold top level meetings with either President Sata or Mr Zulu, to try to resolve the standoff but the minister of Justice has already said he is not interested in meeting him.
On Henry, Dr Malama said the attempt to bring him to answer charges will bring closure to the member of the former first family, so that he can clear his name.
The involvement of SARPCO and Interpol is a step up in the manhunt that has drawn local and international interest as President Sata fights corruption. President Sata has stated that the fight against corruption shall spare no friends and members of his Cabinet.
