UNIP president Tilyenji Kaunda will contest the August 11 general elections without any electoral pact and the party has announced that Njekwa Anamela will be the running mate.
Mr Kaunda announced the party’s decision at a press briefing at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda House yesterday.
“As UNIP, we have resolved to contest the coming August 11 elections at all levels with our party president Tilyenji Kaunda as presidential candidate and further endorse Njekwa Anamela as his running mate,” UNIP Northern Province chairperson Komichili Kafunda said.
Mr Kaunda said UNIP will contest the elections without forming an alliance with another political party.
“UNIP is a party that has gone into alliances with other political parties, but we don’t think that they are necessary all the time. We are not looking forward to forming an alliance with any political party,” he said.
And Mr Kaunda has condemned pockets of political violence ahead of the August elections.
“We in UNIP have observed with great concern the inter-party violence that is taking place. We condemn unreservedly this trend that is contradicting our motto of One Zambia, One Nation,” he said
Meanwhile, Mr Anamela has commended the restoration of former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity by the High Court.
“It’s a good thing when we do not harass former heads of State deliberately. We think that no-one should be prosecuted for political reasons, so the restoration of Rupiah Banda’s immunity is okay,” he said.
Mr Anamela said the lifting of Mr Banda’s immunity was irregular.

Who is tilyenji kikikikiki 😂 ah democracy awe mwe
With all due respect. UNIP has blown away like a puff in the wind. Seriously on the ground they are not active but as a registered structure they are. Our current economic woes are being likened to UNIP days so how and how will UNIP sell its manifesto because Zambians including UPND are tired and indeed sick of PF under the patronship of ECL because they are reliving memories of UNIP which we had burried. Ba Tilyenji our doors are open there is always room for a party that needs to form an alliance in UPND. We shall warmly welcome UNIP and its members. Please do not fear UPND awaits your retraction of not being interested in alliances. This year its combined efforts that will unseat PF dressed in what we call alliances.
UNIP Mulilo uwaitako apya Kumulu LESA panshi TILYENI KAUNDA Go Goooooo,!!!!!!!! But remember 50+1 Unless MPs.
The real reason UNIP is still there even if their leadership know for sure that they haven’t got the slightest chance of winning is because they get foreign funding, so this is just to sort of continue receiving that funding
Its the EW Tarrys building, united quarries, kk house and others that keeps them afloat. Only a deliberately obtuse person would consider that TK could even successfully figh
That’s a good gesture,we will rally behind you because we need parties that preach peace.
Can you sit for an exam which you are 100% sure of failing????? And if you do, what should people conclude about your personality?
Running mate to where ba UNIP mwebantu.
This running away mate is even wasting his saliva commenting on matters he has no slightest idea! Awe Zambia ni katwishi.
Ba tilyenji ‘what are are going to eat’ mulei poselafye nshita.
Ba tilyenji ‘what are we going to eat’ mulei poselafye nshita.
The deal is that whoever controls UNIP as president controls UNIP assets. TK is only interested in collecting the dividends of the party companies. UNIP owns profitable companies.
