Measles Breaks out in Lusaka and Luapula Provinces

Measles has broken out in Lusaka and Luapula provinces.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Kamoto Mbewe disclosed the development to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today.

Dr. Mbewe said currently the two provinces have recorded 185 measles cases.

He explained that the Ministry is strengthening the vaccination exercise to prevent more children from catching the disease.

He attributed the outbreak to parents and guardians who refuse to take their children for vaccination as one of the major contributing factors.

He said since the first outbreak of measles this year, the Ministry of Health has recorded a total of 20, 250 measles cases countrywide.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mbewe has said the Ministry has recorded a reduction in typhoid and cholera cases.

He said Nakonde has not recorded a new case in the last two weeks and that only one patient at Yukwa Mission Hospital in Western Province is undergoing treatment.

He added that a total of 239 cases of typhoid have been recorded since its first broke out.

Dr. Mbewe could not, however, state how many cases have been recorded in Lusaka of the same disease.

And on Cholera he said no new cases have been recorded in Mpulungu and Ngwerere in the last two weeks.

He said in bid to prevent more cholera cases the Ministry has strengthened community sensitization and chlorine distribution especially in areas prone to cholera.

The Ministry of Health spokesperson explained that the Ministry was working in collaboration with water utility companies to provide safe water.

Dr. Mbewe encouraged people to observe high standards of hygiene as cholera and typhoid can be prevented in a clean environment.
