SIXTY-EIGHT girls at Hillside Girls High School in Chipata reportedly fell pregnant in 2011 alone.
The cases have since been reported to the office of the Eastern Province AIDS Coordinating Advisor (PACA).
Provincial AIDS Coordinating Advisor, Emmanuel Chama, revealed the development on Wednesday during a meeting of the Provincial AIDS Taskforce (PATF) held in Chipata.
Mr Chama said that 61 cases were confirmed by doctors while seven others were received by his office.
“My office received 68 cases of school going children at Hillside Girls falling pregnant and we had 61 confirmed by doctors while seven were not confirmed but were received at my office,” he said.
He said that despite the impregnated girls being below the age of 16, none of these was reported to the police as defilement cases.
Mr Chama, however, said any incidences of pupils below 16 who fell pregnant, were regarded as defilement cases and were supposed to be reported to the police.
He said that the number of pupils getting pregnant in schools was an indication that unprotected sex was being practiced and that this placed a number of people at high risk of contracting HIV.

in zambia we have been talking too much. look at the education policy its vry clear that Guidance and Counselling in schools should be streangthened but look at the implimatetion, very poor… pliz GRZ help us to have trained teachers man GC in school so work as balangizi becuase same pupils dont have time to share fact with parents and signficant elders.

@ Bbala ngombe – would you rather backstreet abortions continued? Would you rather zambia lost so many women from unsafe abortions? because this is happening as we both argue on this blog. It will not stop – so better to have safer options, because whether you like it or not, a good majority of these girls will either go to a witch doctor to be given herbs to abort – or they will find money to pay an illegal unqualified backstreet abortionist!
the problem with zambia is we like to bury our heads in the sand – we must face the realities and stop living in denial – only then will we move fwd as a society

Such developments are very sadening but not surprising there is rampant pre and extramarital sex going all over the country.what is disheartening is the fact that mostly its the young at heart involved in this vice,it leaves me wondering if there will be any credible ladies worth their left in the near future for me to marry.
