HEALTH Workers Get 100 % SALARY INCREMENT, TEACHERS Cry FOUL
GOVERNMENT has increased salaries for all health workers by 100 percent, Minister of Labour, Sport and Youth Chishimba Kambwili said in Ndola yesterday.
He said the pay rise will boost morale among health workers across the country.
“Today , we have increased the salaries for all our health workers by 100 percent, so when the PF government says it is putting more money into people’s pockets, we mean business and we are serious,” Mr Kambwili said.
The minister was speaking after visiting Morganite Limited. He said Government is concerned about the poor salaries many workers get across the country.
Mr Kambwili said the salary increment for health workers is an indication that Government is committed to improving salaries for civil servants, as promised during election campaigns.
And in another development, Mr Kambwili has ordered Morganite Limited general manager Stanley Kampo to report to the ministry next Tuesday.
The minister said Government is concerned with reports that Mr Kampo abuses workers and insults them.
“First of all, I am shocked that the person we are talking about is a Zambian and honestly, how can he do that to fellow Zambians? I want him next Tuesday at my office so that he can answer the allegations,” Mr Kambwili said.
He was speaking at Morganite Limited after paying a surprise visit to the company. The minister also ordered management to engage a human resource manager to help the company with personnel issues. Mr Kambwili said management should also allow workers to form a union.
And workers complained about the poor salaries offered by management. One worker said the pay slip does not indicate the housing allowance paid to workers and that they have not had a salary increment for the past four years.
Meanwhile, PRESIDENT Sata has asked Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda to explore ways of doubling remuneration of Zambian doctors as a way of putting more money in their pockets and improve health.
Mr. Sata also said rural health centres in the country are in a deplorable state and it is important to improve the doctor to patient ratio by having more doctors attend to patients in rural centres.
“I am pleading with the Minister of Finance,” President Sata said. “We have to find ways of doubling salaries for doctors to beat others in the region, so that we can attract our doctors back.”
If the doctors wages are doubled, a junior Zambian doctor from the University of Zambia could take home about K10 million which is still less than their colleagues in Nambia and South Africa.
President Sata said this at State House yesterday after he swore in a deputy minister, a permanent secretary and ambassadors and high commissioners.
He regretted that it has taken long for some ambassadors and high commissioners to take up their positions despite being appointed as far back as October last year, because of the poor record previous office holders left behind and urged new diplomats to exhibit exemplary behaviour.
The President’s directive is in line with the Patriotic Front campaign promise to improve the health sector by facilitating the building of vital infrastructure that will deliver primary healthcare as close to the people as possible.
In its manifesto on human resource, the PF says it intends to improve conditions of service to minimise the brain-drain.
It also plans to “rehabilitate and expand existing health training institutions to increase the number of graduates”.
Recently, President Sata announced an ambitious plan to erect some 650 health centres countrywide to make health care more accessible.
He said the new health posts are lined up as follows: 98 in Southern Province while Central Province will have 52 and Western Province will have 62 new health posts.
Mr Sata said new health posts will bring with them the benefits of boosting the construction sector and consequently job creation during the construction phase, plus greater access to health, especially in rural areas.
Northern Province will have 107 new health posts while North-Western Province will have 74. Lusaka Province will have 27, Luapula 63, Eastern 68 and Copperbelt 87.
The President said the health posts and residence facilities will be equipped with solar systems, equipment and furniture, hand pumps, medicines, dressing materials, electricity and running water.
President Sata also instructed the Minister of Health Dr Joseph Kasonde to step up the recruitment of health personnel both locally and abroad to ensure that the new health posts are adequately staffed.
Meanwhile, teachers have cried foul over non-increment of their salaries.
Teachers who sought anonymity told Tumfweko that the government should quickly increase their salaries as they have done to the health workers.

Please it’s one step at a time. Even teachers and police personnel will have their salaries increased as well. But with KCM, it’s 17% salary increament this year. SHOCKING!

Anyone with 2 working brain cells would realise that they are being conned coz such remunerations are economically impossible and unsustainable!! Someone,somewhere will have to foot for this hike!!
Zambia has a labour force of about 5-6 million people but only 1/2 million are engaged in “professional jobs”,ie tax payers! Even then,the majority of these are Govt employees (who contribute ZERO taxes to the treasury)!! The govt should create a conducive environment where the private sector will expand,hence increase govt coffers,instead of duping the gullible with populist announcements that are economic suicide!!

People are only talking about teachers and police, the civil service is not only health, education and home affairs but there are other ministries where a huge number of civil servants are including the above mentioned ministries. They are about 22 ministries in all who are waiting for a new salary, if you only mention 3 ministries where do you think the remaining 19 ministries will go to.

thats a good move PF government except such increments need to be extended to all civil servants coz every single department or institution is very important and if we also compare with namibia or south africa they would also be way below par! local government is where development starts, we may need to give them 100% increment as well.

this is a very good move. those who are talking about the economy are just showing their selfishness and greedy. if someone can own 2.1 billion, even a student having 2 billion what can stop the government from sharing the national cake evenly. Its such retarded thinking that has made us lag behind for a very long period of time. What you are forgetting is that the man in state house now, is not selfish and greedy. look at how he stopped the lavishness of our PSs and how he has cut on travel. so do you think if all the wrongs are corrected can’t this be possible? lets admit that if we continue being selfish every one will leave zambia for greener pastures.

Fellow country men and women please assist me in asking for the government to consider as(teachers) although Roy Mwaba and his friends are fond of over defending their usefulness to the Zambian workers, they have terribly failed to deliver. I say so because take Chongwe teachers for example, to be specific I will pick On Mikango Barracks schools. It was very disturbing to learn that those who teach at the high school get their rural hardship allowance but those at the Basic it was removed that they are not entitled (it has been like this for the past four years)surely where on earth can such a thing be tolerated and the Union are there?. how is it that people working for the same ministry and living in the same place have different conditions of service? is it fair to those our brothers and sisters who have gone to serve in that place? as Union leaders negotiate please consider the concerns of your friends and not be selfish. CAN THE PRESIDENT ALSO EXTEND THIS GESTURE TO THE teachers, because they are the ones who taught these nurses and doctors

Just double the wage bill for all govt employees, period. Civil servants just have 1 union to speak for you, afterall you all have one employer. Why have too many unions with some leaders that can’t even tell the difference between 2 and z?

Its great news but my concern is on this sustainability of this move. The Economic growth is still slow and to me this means the burden will be carried by the few tax payers. I would really what to know the realistic strategy which will be used.

am a teacher by proffesion, let me educate all those who think we r useless. its not easy to mould a grade one pupil, as u may think. in these schools that u c,thea r no books,wic makes it difficult to plan our lessons evryde..our salaries r too low to evn sustain us, bt we realy try..if u feel we dnt do anything stop bringing ur childrn to sch so tht we can c were ths nation ll go..think about others before u start blubbing anyhow..try to put urselves in our shoes@ RFM grow up! u havent cn anything in life..u r jst a spoilt little brat! ur parents have failed u! coz they havnt taught u how to rspect adults…mr president l ll b waiting patiently for our time…

Does this salary increase include supportive staff such as Hospital Administrators,Human Resource Officers,Purchasing Officers,Information Officers,Planners,Accountants who work in the Ministry of Health and hav a GSS(cabinet office)salary scale ‘n nt a MS (MoH)salary scale.? Educate me.

For long health workers especially nurses nave not received a significant salary increment as compared to the teacher, so it is thye turn of the health worker to get what they deserve for the work overload especially those in rural areas. Ba KCM know that even civil sevants (health workers) pay tax, not just you ba shimaini. Our govt at work.

our health workers are the lowest paid in southern africa,other health workers have joined ministry of education by teaching sciences leaving patients in the hospitals.Am a teacher but i support the govt move bcoz i know tha next it ll be us (teachers). When MMD govt gave us money,health workers never complained about responsbility allowances which we get,health workers requested for risking allowance bt MMD denied them so lets nt be jealous its coming to us as well.

I personally feel the move to have the moneys for the health guys increased deserves an applause. If anyone has genuine fears or commendations, I think it will be more mature to bring them forward, say on table for all of us to analyse. I do not think this is a forum for insults! This should be a learning ground. To all parents, responsible men and women, ladies and gentlemen, fellow counterpats, boys and girls………….this should be taken as a meeting point for the brilliant of the brilliant, inteligent of the inteligent and the best of the best minds ever.
