EXPELLED Chipolopolo winger Clifford Mulenga has admitted that he was wrong to go out on the town late Monday in Malabo.
He said he is now back to his South African club Bloemfontein Celtic older and wiser following his Africa Cup expulsion by Zambia coach Herve Renard.
Mulenga told MTNFootball before boarding a flight from Malabo to South Africa that he was putting the late night out drinking scandal with four of team mates behind him.
“What I did was wrong and I have learnt from it,” a sober Mulenga said.
“I have spoken to my coach back at Celtic and he has told me to come back and focus and start from where I left off before I went to the Africa Cup.”
Zambian winger Clifford Mulenga has made a passionate apology following his expulsion from Chipolopolo camp house on grounds of indicipline.
Mulenga had earlier implicated teammate Felix Katongo in what emerged as ‘Chipolopolo’s party time out’ at the on going Africa Cup of Nations with Hichani Himoonde, Collins Mbesuma, Jonas Sakuwaha and two other FAZ officials team manager Lusekelo Kamwambi and vice president Boniface Mwamelo on board.
In his message posted on social network Facebook Thursday evening, the 2007 CAF African Young Player of the Year said he had no excuse for what transpired in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
“I just want to say am very SORRY to my parents, my siblings, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunties, my friends, fans, supporters, soccer lovers, the Zambia national team, my FRIENDS in the national team, my club Bloemfontein Celtic and my church,” Mulenga stated.
He added; “I have NO EXC– USE for what I did in Malabo leading to my expulsion from the Zambian team playing in the AFCON 2012.”
Mulenga stated at not time did he mean to cause any shame, anger or disappointment to anyone during national duty.
“Am NOT looking for sympathy or a shoulder to cry on but all am asking of you is forgiveness,” he stated
The former 2007 FIFA Under 20 World Cup envoy said he was going through a tough period and appealed to Zambians to bear with his misdeed.
“Please don’t insult me or judge me. Help me to forget what happened and move on and let’s support the team that remained to finish the tournament. GOD BLESS YOU ALL,” he added.
Mulenga was ejected from camp by coach Herve Renard after he breached curfew rules and was, according to FAZ, not remorseful while the other players apologised.
The talented winger had earlier told journalists that he was never asked to apologise but Renard simply showed him the exit door suggesting he was a bad influence on the team.
Renard and Mulenga have had a turbulent relationship with the Frenchman on most occasions refusing to call him albeit bowing to public pressure for the star’s presence in Chipolopolo.
The winger on Monday evening breached the team curfew and rules and went out drinking in Malabo with team mates Jonas Sakuwaha, Felix Katongo, Hichani Himoonde and Collins Mbesuma who were reprimanded.
Mulenga did not play a single game at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Chipolopolo are on the verge of booking a place in the last four at the expense of Sudan this weekend.
His expulsion was the second major fallout by the one-time African Young Player of the Year with the national team after he clashed in 2009 with Renard over team call-ups.
Then he vowed never to play for Zambia after the French coach repeatedly snubbed him and he quit the national team before he was convinced to come back by his advisors.
