ZAMBIA has been literally turned into a police state as demonstrated by the Patriotic Front (PF) government, says Former Vice President George Kunda.
Mr. Kunda said the PF regime was autocratic, totalitarian and undemocratic inclined to wipe out the opposition and set a one- party state.
And Mr. Kunda has threatened to take the continued harassment and violation of Human Rights to the Southern African Development
Community (SADC) if the situation deteriorated.
Meanwhile Mr. Kunda has described Vice President Dr. Guy Scott as a’ fake Vice President’ who cannot act on the position of President whenever the Head of State was out of the country.
Addressing the Press at the MMD secretariat yesterday, Mr. Kunda said the government had not lived up to its status and as such the observance of Human Rights, the rule of law and constitutionalism were a concern to the nation.
“We have unfortunately come to the conclusion that the PF government is autocratic, totalitarian, undemocratic and somehow inclined to wipe out the opposition and set up a de facto one party state. In particular President Sata has no regard for the opposition and does not treat us fairly,” said Mr. Kunda.
He said President Sata was running a one- man show without consultation even with his ministers and advisers as it was evidenced by the several constitutional and legal errors, omissions and procedural flips which he had committed within a short time of being in office.
Mr. Kunda who is a senior Lawyer observed that the people of Zambia
had expected the PF government to respect human rights, the rule of law and constitutionalism in order to build on where the MMD left but the situation had deteriorated.
Mr. Kunda said it was sad that the PF were arbitrarily arresting and detaining people in the opposition in the pretext of fighting corruption.
He said the first five months of the PF in government had been hell for the members of the opposition, saying former leaders in the MMD have been subjected to untold sufferings by government and its agents.
“During this period security agencies have been violating the fundamental rights of the citizens and especially the rights of members of the opposition because political parties with impunity. They are on rampage brutalizing the people they are supposed to protect,” he said.
He said it was worrying that members of the opposition in the nation were being treated as lesser humans, adding that the treatment which they were receiving was harsh and those that decided to realign themselves with the PF had been protected from any further harassment.
Mr. Kunda complained that MMD and UPND members were living in constant fear and without any protection from the police.
“We have had our property destroyed, our homes broken into, searched illegally. The role of the PF government is to institute consultations in these issues because it will not be helpful for the government if we tabled the matter at SADC,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kunda has described Vice president Scott a dummy vice president who cannot act in the position of President whenever the head of state was out of Zambia.
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema on Tuesday petitioned Ban Ki-moon over the violation of human rights in the pretext of fighting corruption by the PF

Ba Kunda wesu, please let the law take its’ course. When your were assigned the authority to reduce CORRUPTION big man you did nil.Always bear in your mind ba Kunda nothing lasts forever you were protecting each other i assume that there was a tendence of UWUSHILEPO TAKASHIMONE.As a man who is respecting to say that OUR BELOVED NATION (ZED)is becoming a police state is cheap a comment to make.
At present the POLICE & other Law Enforcement Officers are free and happy that Akanfulumede (Government)is on their (police and law enforcement officers)side.
Please, let them weed off the bad ones regardless of status; the connected ones should not wave the flag of immunity
