Fitch’s Comment Shocks Sakeni

HOME affairs minister Kennedy Sakeni says he is shocked that Fitch Ratings can comment on a matter that is active in the courts of law.

Reacting to the organisation’s observation that the possible deregistration of the opposition MMD could increase its concerns over the Zambian government’s policy direction and governance quality, Sakeni said not even himself could comment on a matter that was before court.

“This matter is before the courts of law, and how Fitch comes in to comment, I don’t even understand. This country, we respect the courts and if matters are before the courts we don’t expect anybody to make any comment,” said Sakeni in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.

“And I wouldn’t go any further than that; I leave it to the courts to actually preside on the matter. We’ll accept whatever the court will rule.”

Fitch Ratings which recently lowered Zambia’s economic outlook citing concerns over the direction of the country’s economic policy said additional strain could be placed on Zambia’s (‘B+/Negative/’B') government finances and its relatively strong governance undermined if the Registrar of Societies’ decision to deregister the country’s largest opposition party is not overturned by the courts.

On March 14, the Registrar of Societies announced that MMD would cease to operate as a political party due to the alleged non-payment of dues over the past 20 years.

In Fitch’s view, it was too early to tell if this is simply the action of an overzealous official, or whether the decision was politically motivated, with negative consequences for democracy and governance, factors which Fitch has traditionally regarded as amongst Zambia’s rating strength.

Mr. Sakeni made a reasonable and cogent statement, because, in the light of the perceived economic influence Fitch have and the possibility that they might misuse that against the country, can we expect an independent judgment from the courts on the MMD deregistration?
How disheartening then, to read such a vitriolic, tribally based and hate-filled blog from True bantustans! Very sad, indeed!
Watch it, True bantustans, for you may ruin your very heart by filling it with poisonous and useless thoughts and attitudes, such as you have exposed above!

Hon. Sakeni never mind Fitch they are beneficialy of de MMD rooting thus y they can say anything without regard of de law. These pipo are defending law breakers and they also are law breakers and corupt! Wat typ of an organisation that supot wrong doers? Who doesnt no de offence de MMD comited? Despit being de lagest opposition law is law, its nt an excuse 4 being big, no 1 and i say no 1 is abov de law. Lets call spade a spade nt a big spoon. Leaders must lead with good example. If we tolarate such kind of lawlessness in de name of democracy then we are headed 4 masive destruction 4 our young democracy. So Fitch ur a disapointment 2 our young democracy. Promote good wil and governance nt advocat 4 wrong things. This wil promote misuse of public resources bcoz any big organisation wil break de rules and raws of de land in de name of young democracy. Let de law take its course and dnt coment on issues which r at de court and dnt suport evil things.

If MMD violated and or abrogated from laid down procedure then their deregistration is legit. We cant let governance issues be dictated by foreign institutes just so the country gets good reviews.
If on the other hand the decison to deregistration is ultra vires, unproportional lacks merit, let the courts decide not a ratings body.

My dear minister, Fitch doesn’t care what you say or think. If they forecast poor governance, its downgrading for you. Nothing personal, they’re international and deal with super economies… u.s, japan, uk, germany, france, china etc. So to sit on a stool scratching your head wondering if they are hell bent on destroying your PF regime is paranoia because PF is not that important to them so jst like MMD, get to work and improve our ratings.

If mmd while in power did pay subscription it was an offence.then no registrar of society would dare tell them.so let them go and defend themselves in court.
it will not be good also for registrar of society to driven by politics.this will be the worst of things.
the case is in court lets respect our laws.

Hello, one Zambia one Nation. Brethren this hate between Tongas and Bembas which is growing so big every day is very unfortunate. We are all one before the eyes of our creator. Let us please remember that all leaders are put by God. For Mr Sata to be president of Zambia this time around God knew it before he was born and its for a purpose. So its his duty to fulfil that obligation. Touch not the anointed of God. He is the anointed to lead Zambia this time. If l have offended someone with this forgive me but l would rather be crucified for my righteous than just keep quiet. By the way I’m Ila. Givers Shampule Moonga. Stay all blessed thank you.

Givers you brought some sanity thank you. At the end of the day people like you should speak up or we will be lost. While still at it can you pray for wisdom for our leader His Excellency MCS ? He may have been appointed by God but we all need a little help from time to time. Ukwa is simply not leading.

@Musonda222, do you know the meaning of greedy??? Greedy means when tribe (Bembas) or Party (PF) wants to amass everything in Zambia at the expense of other tribes. You alone do not have titles deeds for Zambia. Zambia belongs to all who live in it. Yes Bembas are greedy coz you took all ministerial positions, parastatal chief executive jobs at the expense of other tribes. And who says the PF is a national party? It is not. It is a party of Bembas just like the UPND is for Tongas, MMD for North Westerners and Easterners and the ADD for eeeeehh BAROTSELAND. Wake up to reality man.

Whether we kill each or not Bembas and Tongas will live side by side. And for one to suggest otherwise about been thiefs, have regrets to say the least, Austin Liato is the biggest gangsta of our times, and no one seem to bother about it, but call innocent people thiefs.
Why has HH not called CHILUBA a thief all this time, what things do they have in common or crimes they commited together.
Did HH betray Mazoka, in his quest for power by destroying all what the man did for UPND
