The Chipolopolo coach says he will bow out if his team fails to reach the finals of the 2014 World Cup taking place in Brazil.
Zambia coach Herve Renard extended his contract to 2014 with the Chipolopolo after winning the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, but he said on Tuesday that he would likely relinquish his engagement if the team fails to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
“My contract with Zambia runs till 2014 but I think I’d leave at the end of 2013 if we fail to qualify for the 2014 World Cup taking place in Brazil,” the 43-year-old former USM Alger coach told French magazine Le Dauphine.
Renard said he was proud of the Chipolopolo’s success in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, but would like to move on to experience the World Cup tournament to further his carrier and satisfy his new passion.
The Frenchman also hit back at those who say his success with the Zambian team was accidental, explaining that it was the result of hard work and faith.
“Nobody can say our success was accidental. It’s wrong. When I look back at where we have come from I can proudly say the title we won was due to hard work, gradual and steady progress and the belief in what we were doing and where we were going,” he added.
