Malawi leader sacks police chief

Malawi’s new President Joyce Banda has sacked the country’s police chief Peter Mukhito, state media have reported.

Ms Banda was sworn into office on Saturday following the death last week of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

She had been vice-president since 2009, but had fallen out with Mr Mutharika and left his ruling party.

No reason was given for Mr Mukhito’s removal, but a BBC reporter says he had been accused of mishandling anti-government riots last year.

Peter was behind a lot of deaths. Let him go and we pray that he face justice. The police service was full Alomwe. God Knows, Malawi was being divided by this tribe. It was terrible in Malawi. The Almighty has answere us.

I strongly support the president for this quick action because Malawi was slowly drifting into an autocratic country with Mingu’s minnions. I feel he should also fire more ministers in the current cabinet as many of them behaved foolishly during Mbingu’s time.
