Liato granted Bail, Pending Appeal

Convicted former labour minister Austin Liato has been granted a K50 million cash bail pending appeal to the High court with two working sureties in his own recognisance.

Principal magistrate Aridah Chulu in granting bail this morning also ordered Mr Liato to be reporting to Lusaka Central Police every two weeks.

Magitrate Chulu has further ordered Mr. Liato to surrender his passport to the senior clerk of court.

The former labour minister was last week slapped with a two years jail sentence with hard labour after being found guilty of taking pecuniary advantage of money suspected to be proceeds of crime.

This is in the matter in which Mr Liato was facing one count of being in possession of K2.1 billion suspected of being proceeds of crime contrary to section one (1) of the forfeiture of proceeds of crime Act number 19 of 2010 of the laws of Zambia.

The K2.1 billion was unearthed from the ground at his Mwembeshi farm were he had buried it.

He became the first high-profile figure of the previous MMD Government facing corruption charges to be convicted.

Liato should have been denied bail until he appeals! Anyway, the high court is cognisance of these mafia tactics and that is why they usually review sentence to ensure the convict serve a deserved sentence.

What are the grounds of his appeal? If our criminal justice system is serious, the Appeals Court should throw the appeal out with costs and even increase the sentence to 10 years! Can you also investigate the source of the K50million he has paid for bail?

Forget Liato and let’s talk football. When I saw the shepolopolo coarch on Muvi TV this evening I immediately realised why they lost 4-1 to Banyana Banyana. Where on earth did you see such a fat coarch. You can even see BP on her face. Somebody up there must be serious and hire one with an athletic physique. Not ci madumbo maliketi kapompa saladi, siakudya delele.

What a pathetic criminal justice system full of connivance, lacunas and impartiality.I saw it coming that to hoodwink our thinking bakamulasafye ka 2 yrs kabooza.then start appealing.afterall remember wen u are given 2 yrs u serve less than the two years(1 yr plus few months)ul c thl continue adjourning.By the time the high court passes judgement upholding the decision of the lower court, the chap will have finished his serving.Liato kept quite in court when he was asked to defend himself.U see.Now how does a person who elected to remain silent in defence after being sentenced put up his hand and say i want to appeal.Crooked justice system.Thats why Mu Zambia.things are realy frustrating. The way Liato’s case made headlines kwati theyl charge him for something like in the line of economic sabotage etc.2yrs and chikala nolufumo ali panse.Back alesheta money imbi iyo ashiikile ku kaoma.

H Liato did not offer any defence in the main trial and thus did not waste the courts time, which is great but after his sentence, he snubs the sentencing abd says the sentence is short! after spending a few nights there, if st all he did, we cant say coz a man with such cash could pay his way and be sneaked to some room with facilities. now he has appealed. we are not sure what he is appealing against. Is the sentence too short? Is he asking that his farm be returned to him.is he asking to be fined instead?
