Sudan Beat Zambia 2-0

African champions Zambia lost in Sudan, Ivory Coast made a winning start under a new coach, and Senegal overcame two shocks to defeat Liberia in 2014 World Cup qualifiers Saturday.

Zambia swept aside Sudan in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with France-born coach Herve Renard saying the losers played “sleep-inducing” football.

But the Sudanese Falcons were wide awake for the Group D clash in sweltering Khartoum, dominating from the kick-off to the final whistle with second-half goals from Mohamed Tahir and Saifeldin Ali securing a 2-0 victory.

Renard, reportedly being paid 100,000 dollars a month with the goal of taking Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) to the World Cup finals for the first time, had premonitions before flying to Khartoum.

“I’m really sure we are not the best team in Africa … there are some teams that are stronger than us and we know that … we have to be very, very good to go to the World Cup,” he told the BBC before matchday one across Africa.

And it does not get any easier for Zambia, who edged Ivory Coast on penalties to win the African title, with a June 9 home fixture against Ghana, who humiliated Lesotho 7-0 Friday in a match interrupted by a power failure.

Former France international Sabri Lamouchi, put in charge of Ivory Coast this week despite no coaching experience, saw the Elephants overcome 10-man Tanzania 2-0 in Group C match via goals from Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba.

Chelsea Champions League hero Drogba, who blazed a penalty over in regulation time of the final against Zambia, struck a free kick against the woodwork in Abidjan and scored the second goal after Aggrey Morris was red carded.

Senegal, who went to the 2012 Cup of Nations as third favourites only to lose all three group games, conceded a second-minute goal against Liberia in Dakar and Newcastle United sharpshooter Papiss Demba Cisse missed a penalty.

But the Teranga Lions lowered the blood pressure of caretaker coach Joseph Koto by levelling through Ibrahima Balde before half-time and late goals from Dame Ndoye and Sadio Mane delivered a 3-1 Group J success.

Morocco, another country to make an unexpected first round exit from the Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, drew 1-1 in Gambia with Houssine Kharja equalising after Abdou Jammeh struck early for the Scorpions.

Tunisia fought back to beat Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in Monastir, Sierra Leone defeated Cape Verde Islands more convincingly than the 2-1 Freetown scoreline suggests and Burkina Faso were held 0-0 in Ouagadougou by Congo Brazzaville.

Those who are busy insulting the Chipolopolo, shame on u!!! It as gud as insulting yoselves becoz the boys are representing the entire nation. If u can say Chelsea, Man U or Asenal etc 4 lyf whether win or loose, wat about yo own team? This is nt the tym 2 critise but 2 help the boys gain the momentum 2 do it. This is nt the end, they cn stil perfect on the skil & tactics.
    Go! Zambia! Go!
    Go! Chipolopolo! Go!

We must not allow ourselves to be exposed to mediocrity in terms of playing standards we african champions and we must maintain that . Our technical bench is full of people who cannot read the game starting with the head coach. What game plan did he have for the game. His too arrogant and he must just take the blame, who told him that sudan went too sleep when we beat them 3 nil at the Africa cup final. they studied our game plan and then RH uses the same team which even never trained together for long in camp.
Mind you Ghana is also coming to revenge the loss, so please work up and let the sleeping dogs lie, we will never forgive you if you fail us again. You have the best players ,so we need results.

No offence to all my fellow chipolopolo bros and sisters, but I find it good that Zambia lost. After the Afcon it became so reluctant and sleepy but with this Lose, we’ve been slaped awake and reminded who we are, we are Champions and that’s what we are going to be this weekend! So lets not say bad things about our upcoming matches because our tongues have power to change things (Power Of A Tongue) So let’s mind what we say….

Zambia was too relaxed… football is about tactics and from the look of things HR did not prepare the lads well for the game. to be at the top you cannot afford to relax. its time our footballers realized that everyone wants to beat em and they must rise to the challenge. come June 9 amafi tatulefyaya, we want to watch football. Pull up yo socks bafikala

Bane this is not a good start.A draw game would have been better. We are African Champions and everyone wants to know how ae are perfoming.Already teams like Ghana,Ivory Coast are excited that now its there turn to win after Zambia’s perfomance. We can not allow this bane…Elyo coach ale fola sana ulipiya he must start perfoming en not rely on the past glory..Awe!!

Zambia as champions should never have gone to sleep.Football is about present performance and not the past hence we should never even think that when we face another team they are intimidated bcos we are champions. That competition we won is past.

The Coach should always use players that are performing well in there respective leagues and not based on the performance of afcon we won. For Sudan consideration should have been on Sakuwaha who is used to that humid condition and is doing very well in that league. Next time the coach should learn to listen also to the cries of the Zambians when they say something. He is not the alpha and the omega.
Wishing Zambia all the best on Saturday.
