GREAT ACHIEVEMENT! Nigeria Girl Bags PhD At 25

She’s young and imbued with the spirit of excellence. 25-year-old Opeyemi Sodipe set a new record during the 10th convocation of the Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State on Sunday as she became the first graduate of Babcock to bag a PhD at 25.
Miss Sodipe bagged a PhD in Business Information. According to her growing up story, as she narrated, she had a bad academic start. She was a dullard until an incident changed this when she was in JSS3 at King’s International School in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“I cannot describe myself as an average student when I was in primary and junior secondary school. I was a dullard. But this changed when our literature teacher in JSS 3 gave us a test and I failed woefully. The infuriated teacher while distributing our scripts just threw my own at my face and abused me. She called me olodo (an academic non-performer) and I was greatly embarrassed in front of my classmates. I wept till I reached home,” she stated.
On getting home, she told her mother about the ‘insult’ unleashed on her by her teacher. But to her surprised, her mother too scolded her. However, her mum did what a responsible parent should do: “She later encouraged me to buckle up. She said my teacher’s action should be seen as a wake-up call. I took the advice and prayed to God to give me wisdom that night and everything changed when I got to SS1. I always emerged as one of the best in my class till I left the school in 2002,” she said.Since then, this Ogun State-born lady has not looked back. She gained admission to BU in September 2002 and graduated in 2006 as the best graduating student in her class. Also at the University of Ibadan, while studying for her Master’s degree, she emerged the second best graduating student with a score of 69 in 2010. The best graduating student in her class then made 69.9.Her proud parents – Mr. & Mrs. David and Deborah Sodipe - who accompanied her to the convocation, said that God’s grace, discipline and sacrifice on their part were responsible for their daughter’s feat.

Its a pity in Africa, calling that a great achievement. all the girl knows are academic theories and concepts founded way back. obviously she is looking forward to work ( doing same things daily) great achievers in life are not proffessors or PHD Holders but people who conceive and bring to reality great scientific, commercial, social etc ideas. e.g guys who discovered planes, cars, etc. after all the qaualification she has is just to make her buy bread and butter. we need people to do extra ordinary things to put africa on the map not academicians who are not useful.

wonderful, but on second thought it is nigeria. listen pipo even before reading the story I guessed that it can only be in nigeria. that is a country where u find a Dr, Dr, Dr something or prof., prof.prof. something-meaning one person with 9 PhDs. why coz they get them under crookedness. Just look at their universities, so small with no furniture let alone infrastructure. lecture rooms are like primary classrooms in zambia. High Schools like hillcrest, dk, chizongwe, chassa, kitwe boys, hellen kaunda, st mary’s (in chipata, lsk, livinstone), kabulonga girls/boys etc ie grade A schools can easily be ‘topclass’universities in nigeria.

Give credit where it’s due people. The girl worked hard & earned her grades! I went to school in Botswana & my former school Masunga Senior Secondary school north of Francistown had world class facilities & modern infrastructure making the over-rated UNZA look like a poor funded basic school. leakages in zed schools???!!!

congrats my freind.wen we invest in education it z worthwhile and its only a fool who can demean such an achievement from a lady of such academic status.personally i get loans from microfin, bayport and blue financial institutions to finance my level 6 graduate diploma in purchasing and supply and it has not been easy to do so.MAYO MWABOMBENI AT 25 TO VE PHD ITS NOT EASY

  29. ENGINEER

    June 5, 2012 at 3:43 pm

@ mubanga, let me tell you one reality.. making more monry in life is not linked to how long you sit on the desk but on how you apply your self. if rely on working for people other than yourself you will remain an average man. this of somthing else to do to earn you more money than waiting on your salary.

Postgraduate qualifications only make sense when obtained by people that have actually applied themselves in real life situations and can utilise them at work or on their businesses to enhance productivity or in poverty alleviation work. It’s good that she’s achieved it though – than to be roaming the streets at night or jumping from club to club like this other one who’s just died after sleeping with a dog!

Engineer take note noone discovered or invented a car, and/or aeroplanes. These are inventions that came about after a conglomeration of various scientific thought. In fact governments played a role by funding such inventions and by bringing together scientists to work on the dream.

Kalijo pa Zed!! Too much leakages poor facilities, low morale among teachers, Botswana tops all Countries in africa apart from South Africa. Senior secondary schools/ High sch infrastracture in Bots cant be compared to any college or University here pa Zed. Lets give credit where its due i wish my daughter can be the next.

@ziman, the problem with most zambians is that they like making comments based purely on ignorance at times. Take time to travel & see how other countries are doing. In Botswana most junior schools can easily be high schools here while senior schools can easily be universities here.

Congrats. At what age did she start school?.. School certificate on average takes 12yrs. University Degree on average takes 3-4 yrs. PHD on average takes 3-5 yrs. Let us assume she started school at 5yrs. Logic. 5+12+4+4 = 25yrs.

    ITS POSSIBLE…..

Indeed education is essential, but above all, the most important thing is WISDOM (Prov 4:7). Am not despising education, nor am I jeolousy of the Nigerian young PHD holder, but I just want to inspire someone.
I graduated from Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS) in 1999 with what was called MODULE F (final level at that time). I was one of the few students awarded for distinction. I worked briefly for a construction company and later studied for my Masters Degree in the UK. After that, I came back to Zambia and worked for a renouned company, which later went under. I received my terminal dues, which I squndered in beer drinking and bought a BMW. I became a destitute and later sold my vehicle and other belongings at a cheap price. My wife’s income was not enough to sustain us, therefore, we moved in to be kept by my brother-in-law (husband to my young sister), together with our baby. My brother-in-law would indirectly despise me and even threatened to divorce my sister for keeping me and my family. My wifes relatives also started encouraging my wife to divorce me.
I later met a former schoolmate from primary school who used to be very dull, whilst I used to shine with my No 1s or 2s. I discovered that he was proprietor of a number of successful businesses which included a milling compmany, a fleet of buses, etc. He was staying in a mansion in Lusaka’s top residential areas. Through interaction, I discovered that, he only reached Grade 12.

Upon learning about my situation, he offered me a job at one of his companies, which I declined because it was slightly lower for my qualifications and the other reason was pride of him being my boss. Preassure mounted from my brother-in-law and my wife’s family. I tried to look for a job, but failed, as you know the job situation in Zambia. I had no option but to take up that job from my former dull schoolmate – he became MY EMPLOYER. This job brought me up again as I was able to have my own accomodation.I later, after 4 years of working for him, joined the government as a civil servant, though I remain indebted to him forever.
THIS IS A TRUE STORY, I KNOW ON TUIMFWEKO WE LIKE COMMENTING FOR FUNNY, BUT AM SERIOUS.
The Bible says “…let he who has ears hear…”
