UPND Advised To Sue Police Officers Over The Demonstrations.

The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has advised the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) to take legal action on individual police officers that are alleged to have assaulted its members.

The UPND is considering complaining to the United Nations on what they term as human rights abuses by the Patriotic Front government, following the beating up by police of its members during a demonstration on Wednesday.

SACCORD information officer Obby Chibuluma says although the UN system provides for citizens of member states to raise concerns of human rights violation with the human rights council; they risk not getting the necessary justice.

Mr. Chibuluma says the decisions made within the UN system may not be binding but mere political statements.

Speaking to QFM, Mr. Chibuluma says the best the UPND can do is to lay individual assault charges on the involved police officers including the Lusaka Police commissioner Charity Katanga.

He says it is more appropriate for the UPND to get judgment from the local courts rather that going through the international system.

Its sad if our leaders like HH are stil thinking the UN wil solve our problems. He must not create problems that he cant handle,he asked for permission but denied he could have waited till granted.
the use of force will be received by the same amount of force.the UN wont solve the problems in UPND,just go to a convention and elect another leader maybe UPND will form government but not with HH.

HOW DO YOU SUE THE STATE WHEN YOU HAVE BROKEN THE LAW KNOWING FULLY WELL THAT THE MATTER YOU ARE DEMOSTRATING AGAINST IS BEFORE THE COURTS OF LAW? UPND GET PROPER GUIDANCE FROM ME OTHERWISE INNOCENT SOULS YOU ARE USING WILL BE IN TROUBLE !

HH and UPND must now try to sell themselves in places where they have no or few members than concentrating in southern province where he is aready popular. When wil underfive grow his membership in other places other than SP. Remember this that MMD wil use n dump you like what chilufya did. Change your political tactics before its too late other than fighting the police.yo big war is to win members not fight policemen because they are a small number.wake up young man. Politics is about membership not what you are worth.

Yes, sue the Lusaka Police Command and the individual police officers involved in that brutality. Let the courts deal with them so that other overzealous policemen can also learn from the judgement that will be meted on their friends.

well, all of you who have become professional critics of HH and what he stands, you may wish to reflect seriously on your narrow and parochial analtyical frameworks. the question of police brutality can be addressed in a number of ways e.g. litigation, petition, police public complaints authority etc. if, in your ignorance. you think lodgin a complaint with the UN is meaningless, ask gadafi

My wonder at the little mindedness of people leading some organizations cotinues to grow. Do you need to study law for you to know that if you break the law you will be dealt with? Sadly, the party UPND made a foolish decicion but the bruises you got are personal. And U sit thinking UN will listen blindly!

Well, being dealt with if one breaks the law does not mean that police should be brutal. I do not think the Zambian law allows police brutality even if one is guilty of breaking the law. No matter how we put it, the police in this case was totally wrong in the way they handled the whole issue and as such they deserve to be reprimanded.

Wel am one of those people who wil always stand for the truth.the ZP and UPND were all at fault in the sense that, the ZP over exercised their powers hence, ending up brutalising innocent lives and on the other hand the UPND should not gone ahead with the demonstrations because the go ahead was not granted.now the best action here is for UPND to seek justice wherever they can get it because this was too much ok,remember the MONGU saga.i for one i think the ZP has to be taken to task period!

What you term as police brutality may be explained as ‘munimum force’ by ba Buju. An altercation over terminologies will ensue. By the time you or the courts have decided which words mean what, even the bruises would have healed. But the lesson will have been learnt: Never dare the law with impunity!
