Felix Mutati Quits
MMD Lunte member of Parliament Felix Mutati has resigned as leader of the opposition in Parliament.Mr Mutati resigned yesterday during an MMD national executive committee (NEC) meeting held between14:30 hours and 18:30 hours at Courtyard Hotel in Lusaka. An impeccable source at the MMD secretariat confirmed Mr Mutati’s resignation last night.The source said Mr Mutati had also wanted to resign his party position of chairperson for trade and commerce but he was persuaded against doing so.
On Wednesday, Chipili member of Parliament (MP) Davies Mwila asked Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini to nullify the appointment of Mr Mutati as leader of the opposition because the MMD no longer has the required numbers in the House. But Dr Matibini reserved ruling on the matter, saying he would deliver his verdict after the July 5 parliamentary by-elections.
According to the parliamentary legislation, a party can only be recognised as an official opposition and appoint a leader of the opposition if it has a membership of at least one-third of 158 MPs. This translates to at least 53 seats. The leader of the opposition is entitled to an office at Parliament and treated with the respect of a Cabinet minister.
In his point of order on Tuesday, Mr Mwila stated that Mr Mutati should not continue serving as leader of the opposition because the MMD seats have dropped from 54 to 51, which is below the minimum requirement.
This follows the High Court’s decision to nullify the Chama North and Livingstone seats as well as the declaration of the Muchinga seat vacant after the death of former Vice-President George Kunda.
The MMD is contesting the Muchinga and Chama North parliamentary by-elections set for July 5 but not the Livingstone seat.

Dirty Zambian politics! Felix is a brilliant economist, he’s still young but because of our useless politics, he’s going to go to the waste! What a shame! In Zambia if one loses a party presidential election they become automatic ‘enemies’ to the one who wins & the winner with all his minions will do everything to kick out the so-called enemy! MMD is gone & I hope they vanish for good!!!

Mutati has joined PF. Upnd will never penetrate the Northern part of Zambia. You had Chisanga in the past, what happened to him? So Mutati be careful with any links to Upnd. They will just use you to gain support in the North and later dump you by these Tongas. Ask Chisanga what happened to him by these Hakaivotela Humwine party!! Viva PF, until 2031. So forget UPND.

Umuntu mutwe, indeed some fools here are clearly dumb, bafikala kwati babomfya imputi pakutontonkya. How do you raise an argument about HH who is not even mentioned in the article. For God’s sake you may love PF but that does not merit individual attacks on HH. All said I think zambian politics has a long way to go because its anchored on frustrating your foes, lets be issue based. I can see Mutati quiting politics all together because of what I have mentioned. What a great loss it would be.
