Ndola Mourners In Shock After Finding ‘Dead’ Relative Alive
THERE was drama in Ndola’s Itawa area last week when family members who had gathered to ‘mourn’ their relative discovered that the body they had taken to the mortuary was not their relative’s but someone else’s and that their relative was alive.
Explaining the incident in an interview yesterday, a cousin of the 27-year-old man whose relatives thought had died said her cousin went missing from home for over three days.
“…when my uncle who has been keeping him discovered that he had been missing for days, he tried to reach him on his mobile phone but he could not get through. After a day or so, my uncle heard that there was a dead body lying along the line of rail near his place. He went there with his other niece and found the body which they took to the mortuary and informed relatives about the calamity. He informed all of us of how badly he had been beaten before he was murdered,” said the cousin who opted anonymity.
She said the following day, relatives from different parts of the country gathered at the house of mourning in Itawa and mourned for three days.
She said on the third day, all the necessary arrangements were put in place and that the only thing that remained was to go back to the mortuary to prepare the body for burial.
“When people went to the mortuary, they were surprised to see their relative looking taller than usual. Just as they were about to clean the body, they all discovered that it was not their relative after all but the mortuary attendant insisted that it was the same body that they had taken. My uncle who took the body to the mortuary did not waste time to inform his relatives that he had actually picked a wrong body,” she said.
She said more drama unfolded when the person who took the body to the mortuary informed everyone about their new discovery.
She said some people burst into laughter, while others who were upset started insulting the person who took someone else’s body to the mortuary without clearly identifying it or making an effort to find out the whereabouts of his nephew.
She explained that what hurt people most was the amount of money spent on the ‘funeral’ to feed a lot of people, and to buy the coffin.
“I did not blame him that much because my cousin has a lot of mobile numbers and when he tried some, he did not get through and his friends, too, failed to get hold of him. But after discovering that he was not dead, one of his friends tried his other number which went through without any difficulties. He answered the phone and when asked whether he was alive or not, he responded by saying ‘mwalipena, pantu ine naliya ku Mpongwe mukushita amataba’ (Are you mad? Don’t you know that I travelled to Mpongwe to buy maize?)”.
She said family members made sure that they put him on the phone’s loudspeaker to be sure he was truly alive before dispersing.

they made a mistake,how do you mourn the body of sam1 you have not seen.some of us have gone missing 4 more than three days,the family didnt mourn.
