Inter-Cape Mainliners Hits Local Routes, Adds Competition As Local Transporters Cry Foul

Road Traffic and Safety Agency (RTSA) has clarified that Inter-Cape Mainliner can legally operate on local routes in Zambia.

RTSA Director, Fredrick Mwalusaka, explained that the bus company meets the necessary criteria to obtain a local road service licence in Zambia.

Mr. Mwalusaka said the company has all the basic requirements to have a licence issued to them.

He was reacting to threats by local bus operators that they would take legal action against the agency if it does not revoke the local route
licence that has allegedly been granted to Inter-Cape Mainliners.

The local bus operators are arguing that Inter-Cape Mainliners was a South African company and therefore does not deserve to get a local licence.

Mr. Mwalusaka confirmed that bus operators have since lodged in a formal complaint to his office but explained that Inter-Cape Mainliner is a Zambian company and not South African.

He further revealed that the bus company in question has a certificate of incorporation from the Registrar of Companies and an investment permit from the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA).

He explained that procedure was followed in issuing the licence but noted that RTSA had however written to the Attorney General for legal advice on whether any laws were violated.

He further explained that the company had been mistaken to be South African because the majority of its shareholders were from that country.

Zambian bus operators have expressed concern over the issuance of a local route licence to Inter-Cape Mainliners, a company alleged to be South African.

They complained that the move would impact negatively on the local transport industry in Zambia.

Why are the local transporters crying?? Is it because of the poor standards they are currently offering?? Guys just jack up your standards, it is survival of the fittest and elimination of the weakest. Intercape, welcome on board. At least commuterss have a wider choice. Competition is healthy!!

Stop being academic. Intercape, translux, greyhound are all owned by Autonet. Autonet is a division of Transnet. Transnet Ltd is wholly owned by SA government. Its transport divisions include SAA (Air), Spoornet (railway), Autonet (road), Petronet (fuel) etc. There are no private shareholders in these companies. Intercape is pure RSA govt.

This is what we have been crying for.
    1. Intercape “is allegedly South African” so what? Is Samsung Zambian, Is Airtel Zambian, Is Herve Renard Zambian?
    2. We are tired of seeing Chinese G-strings every time we get on bus meant to carry bread.
    3. We are tired of going under smelly conductors’ armpits. We need the local bus back in town.
    4. How many of you have not had a garment torn by those poorly welded seats on Toyota Hiaces?
    5. Intersh*ty Bus Terminus is now a collection of call boys – surely Intercape will not need to use them to load their buses.
    6. We are hosting the UNWTO next year, surely we need buses that are of international standards.
    7. For the local, incompetent, insulting, dirty transporters I now offer you unserviced routes to Lukulu, Sikongo, Chiawa, Chief Madzimawe and Jimbe or Kalene Hills. You see, it is not the end of the World. You can also try Soweto Market to Lubumbashi or Mbuji Mayi. Wake and Live!

@wiseman – on employment, I do not think or see Intercape bringing RSA drivers/conductors into Zambia – so no loss of employment here. If anything conductors will now be able to pay PAYE and NAPSA.
Again- there is a province in Zed that insists on local businesses only, and the result? Poor restaurants and public toilets, no ATM’s while on other side of the river there are banks, Nando’s, Furnmart, Spar etc. So promoting local will not always yield improved service or quality of life.

Standards need to be jacked up, our local bus operators are not serious in the manner they conduct business. Just see the nonsense that goes on at Inter City Bus Terminus. the Ngwangwazis and the bus crew will sell tickets and detain passengers. When a refund is asked for they are refused and police are there just watching by and receiving bribes. There is no regard for the passengers. Its high time they shut up and put up

there is no problem bringing intercape, but can a zambian transporter be allowed to operate local routes in SA,cant you learn from Tanzania its also impossible for Zambians truckers to bring goods from Dar because of red tape we need to protect our local operators, if i may ask where will intercape take their profits

Ladies and Gentlemen, mamas and papas, monks and nuns. Allow me to empress my views on the matter. To begin with I would like to tell RTSA that they have not made a wise decision in allowing a foreign owned company to come and operate in our Zambia soil. To begin with, why is it that us Zambian think (I mean Always think) the foreign is laka? These South Africans are coming here to get the jobs that are helping our brothers out there to make a living. How dull can we get surely? Look at the us; we are the only ones that are busy issue permit to other foreign guys to come and operate within out country. Look at Tanzania, for example, our busses cannot go into Tanzania, but their busses are all over Zambia, you mean we can’t see that? It’s about time we started giving our selves priority and also believing in ourselves. Ba RATSA, wake up and smell the coffee, instead of you making your local services better your are busy enriching other guy? C`mon!!! In my opinion, such a decision, Mr. Mwalusaka, can only be made if we do not have any local guys giving us such a service. How many countries have you “helped” and how far are you in terms of development from the same countries you helped (Malawi, RSA, Zimbabwe)? It is regrettable and a shame that we still want to make other countries richer, 49 years post independence. Zambians believe in your selves and take advantage of your beautiful country, or else you will die poor, all in the name of “Foreign is better that local”!

  30. Intercape

    July 6, 2012 at 10:27 am

I am making the following statement on behalf of Intercape:

The local Zambian routes will be operated by our Zambian sister company, using locally registered coaches and Zambian staff. Our aim is to establish a safe, dependable and affordable luxury service, with the highest standards of quality and customer care. Our highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of our passengers. We believe in healthy competition, and we will work with anyone who advances these ideals and acts in the best interest of their passengers.

We will bring our market-leading coaches, technology, systems and passenger transport knowledge to Zambia. We plan on expanding our investment in Zambia over the coming years, and opening more routes. Our plans also include the establishment of local infrastructure, know-how and capacity to build and repair coaches.

Intercape is a family-owned business (not the South African government), and a proud signatory to the international “unashamedly ethical” campaign.

In a modern world of competition its inconceivable that one will waste time crying foul when a new competitor enters the jungle, instead of upping up standards and doing some heavy promotion and advertising! Zambians must wake up to the realisation that in this globalised world its quality service that will ensure success!

A few years ago, ZAMTEL said anyone found using VOIP (calls on Skype etc) would be arrested. I thought to myself “to hell with Zamtel” because the truth is, when the world changes, accept and change otherwise you will be another dinosaur. Re-engineer, innovate to keep up. Ichalo tacitalala ngamusunga mwe bana. Even FIFA has now accepted goal-line technology. I am sure with Intercape I will be able to buy my son a seasonal ticket, in advance and at a predetermined price, with a back up bus if one breaks down. HAPPY EARLY CHRISTMAS DADDY!

I do not think there is a law that prohibits Zambians from operating on the Dar Lsk route. Our transporters are not bold enuff to take on the route (there is Kitonga Hills!). Our transporters are not really public service operators at heart. Some made money from copper, others had relatives the Empowerment Commission and bought buses. Let real transporters like Mazhandu cry foul. Otherwise……

Business is not about crying. It is about facing challenges and living up to expectations of the customers who in this case are the travelling public. YES! if your services are poor, you drown. You think we the travelling public should always ingest SHIT!? Welcome inter-cape and hats off to RATSA. Show these chaps what business is all about. Good points Wanyafye Tigers.

I’m a seed inspector and know how quality means with regards to seed. In the same vein, our local transporters are a sorry sight. I can only count few bus transporters who offer good services. We need intercape to stiffen the competition. Go on complain. You are complaining for whose benefit? The passengers or your interest.
