EXPOSED: BETUZ ‘Rebels’ Recruiting Teachers Ilegally To Their Union, Teachers Cautioned

John Mwasha -Luapula Province BETUZ Secretary

THE Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) in Luapula has cautioned its members to be wary of people going round discrediting the union.

Luapula Province Secretary John Mwasha said this when he addressed teachers at St. Mary’s Primary School today.

Mwasha alleged that some people were unscrupulously going round the district recruiting BETUZ members to join their unions.

He said it was disappointing that some members were made to resign from BETUZ under duress because they were deceived that the union leaders were not working.

Mwasha appealed to teachers not make decisions in a hurry to leave the union saying, it was not time to disintegrate but to unite as teachers under BETUZ.

He has since advised new teacher unions to be sincere with the promises they were making to teachers in their quest to woo them into joining their them.

“it is naïve for someone to go round promising teachers that they will build 3000 houses in Kawambwa within two years where teacher members may not even exceed 1500 from all the three teacher unions.” Said Mwasha.

Mwasha said BETUZ was committed to effectively engage government on problems teachers were facing in the district.

He explained that the union was aware that Kawambwa teachers were not getting rural hardship allowance despite the district being in the rural area.

He alleged said that his union had information that some other government workers were getting rural hardship allowance but wondered why teachers were not.

Mwasha has since appealed to the government to consider Kawambwa as a rural district like some other districts in the province.

“We shall dialogue with government so that our teachers can begin getting what they are entitled to”. Said Mwasha.

Mwasha claimed that some ‘individuals’ are going round schools in Kawambwa peddling lies that the union will refund what they have contributed since they became members.

He allegedly that some unions are currently being run by individuals who are embroid debts and whose aim is to lay their hands on the poor teachers’ salary.

He said some of the members were in BETUZ but were expelled due to indiscipline.

“The law is being abrogated because they are recruiting using ‘short cuts’ not as provided for in the labour relations act,” Mwasha said.

Meanwhile, Mwasha has praised government for the introduction of transport allowance adding that the allowance will ease teachers’ transport problems.

He said some teachers were covering long distances to get to their schools and that there was only one bank servicing the entire district hence the need for the allowance.

He said the PF under the leadership of President Michael Sata was a listening government and was committed to alleviating problems teachers were facing across the country.

He said BETUZ will work with the government of the day and will not entertain any political schemes by the opposition to use the union.

A lady from the same union came at our sch recently. Trs were informed that this union had applied to Lsk city council for land where 10000 houses for its members will be build using pre-fab materials. Personally, I know that Lsk city council does not have any more land for such a project. She promised to work on Trs double class allowances, confirmations, upgrading & etc problems. I saw many Trs sign those forms resigning from their unions & other forms to join the same union. The bottom line is, Trs contribute K600 000 each year to unions & yet Trs have numerous problems, they feel neglected even by you their union leaders. Stay in touch with your members.

Since we no longer have basic schools, then we no longer need BETUZ. The people you cal rebels may even be more visionary than you. So before you talk much, consider re-aligning your policy. You may find yourself to be a dinosour in unionism.

what they want is money, the trs’ contributions.the best thing is for the unions to unify.the trachers must not be duped by this union.betuz, broke from znut by telling lies to the teachers, the same lies are being used against them, because these that have formed ptuz were the same gays that were in Betuz.what new things can they offer. the fewer the unions the better, by the way other unions are in the offing.

I’m very uncomfortable with the current Teacher Unions. They have failed to negotiate for extra-duty allowance which teachers deserve to get.BETUZ has failed and should let others try.Let teachers join the new unions because they need unions which can negotiate effectively.

The 3 old unions have completely failed and left trs in the cold. We therefore are emigrating to join PTUZ. All trs resign and join PTUZ to save yourself. Viva PTUZ
