Situation At Inter City Bus Terminus – CHEMBE Bus Services And Others Should Improve

This is Zambia’s largest bus terminus. Based in Lusaka the capital City, it is the center from which buses ferry resources and people into the rural areas across the country. With the advent of ICT’s and advancements in communications, dependence on this form of communication has greatly reduced in comparison to the post colonial days of the 1970′s to 90′s.

The Editor,

I WOULD LIKE TO LODGE A COMPLAINT ON THE STANDARD OF BUSES IN ZAMBIA ESPECIALLY CHEMBE BUS SERVICES THE STANDARDS ARE VERY LOW AND BELOW EXPECTATIONS. IMAGINE WE BOUGHT TICKETS AROUND SEVEN HOURS AND STARTED OFF AROUND 16:30 HRS ON SUNDAY 15TH JULY 2012. POLICE AT INERCITY BUS STATION ARE TOOTHLESS AS THEY SAY THEY ARE NOT AUTHORISED TO CONTROL LOADING OF BUSES AT INTERCITY AND RTSA NUMBERS LEFT IN THEIR OFFICE ARE JUST RINGING WITHOUT RESPONSE ( 0979100002-4) ALL OF THEM ARE JUST RINGING NO FEED BACK. PLEASE LET THEIR BE A CLEAR POLICY ON RUNNING AND LOADING OF BUSES AT INERCITY LET THERE BE A COMPLAINT DESK THEIR AT THE STATION , THESE CHEMBE GUYS TRAP PEOPLE AT EURO STATION OR COUNTER AND SELL DRAG PEOPLE BY PRETENDING THAT THEY ARE FROM EURO AND GET MAN AND GIVE YOU A TICKET AND TO UR SURPRISE THE POINT TO CHEMBE BUS INSTEAD OF EURO BUS THEY EVEN THREATEN TO BEAT U UP AS MOST OF THEM ARE FROM GALAGATA FAMILY BOXERS THEY SAY GO AND REPORT ANY WHERE IF YOU WANT EVEN THE POLICE KNOWS US THAT WE ARE IN-CHARGE. TUMFWEKO PLEASE HELP AND GO AND CHECK WHAT IS HAPPENING AT OUR MAIN STATION.

It is true i support you including power tools they tolerate the co boys to buy ticket on behave of other passages who are not in the q and they are paid for that is it fair on customer who have being on the q and its like the management at lusaka power tools station are very comfortable with it because they have given then freedom.

We are the very people suing Intercape and RATSA about Intecape operating on local routes.
Picture this: In 2010, a woman got RK or Chembe as early as 06hrs at Intersh*ty, hoping to reach C/belt in time to see her son who was oxygen. By 11:00 the bus was still in the station and the driver was somewhere else playing pool or fornicating. She asked the police to intervene to get a refund. Police said “ba MMD chairman balikanya”. I felt for the poor woman. We have a country where your own Police cannot guarantee you security. And we are the first to laugh at the Congolese for burning Chanda……
PF – please move in and bring back dignity to travelers. The police and the RATS have failed. Public transport should not be a jail sentence.

In another incident, one id!ot from one bus company grabbed a child and another grabbed a bag from some other lady to get her into one of their buses. The lady just started weeping – what do you do? Follow the id!ot with your child and lose your bag? I can tell you, public transport was much more organised in the Roman empire that at Intersweety.

Pls travellers, use mazhyandu or euro. Never get a ticket frm chembe or power tools. Can someone tell the owners of these buses that those call boyz are throwing them out of business

  12. Wanyafye Rangers 4 vs Roadmarkings 1

    July 16, 2012 at 3:07 pm

@Mambo and Mecer – very right.
The truth is people own buses for different reasons – to offer a service while making a profit or to own a bus because there is cash to be made. Or to clean their money, etc. This is when what Mr. Chipewo says about transport makes.
Outsource the management of Intercity and other major stations to experienced companies please…..I am not one of those though!

Intercity can be hell on earth am telling you. I remember some three years ago I had a similar incidence with Ticklays. I bought the ticket around 10hrs but we left intercity at 18hrs. Since then it’s Euro or Mazhandu for me.

  15. Stone

    July 16, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Euro, Mazhandu, Post bus. ONLY. These are reliable and honest.
The Intercity officials should intervene for the rest of the cheaters. Nobody should be allowed to board a bus without a ticket. This will take care of the “ghost” passengers.
But in reality take the “red and white” and the “blue” at Intercity bus stop.

There is no order and system at all at the station. The so called call boyz harrass who ever they see carrying laggage and heading torwardz the station. LCC should come up with the system of first come first save of buses especially those onez going out to CB, Northern and luapula. Also chase all those N’gwan’gwazis claiming to be working under these Bus companies and yet they just call boys specialised in harassmsent

True that is what happens when things are left in private hands, some tend to progress while others are lazzing around and complaining of not being supported. However the sad thing is that government institusions also act like chembe buses like Zesco for instance.

    July 16, 2012 at 4:30 pm

A Mr. Okay! Is it true with the allegation or your concern is slightly out of syllabus as you know the writer?
Surely one buys a ticket at 07:22 hrs and you start off at 16:55 hrs even our brothers and sisters from that hospital near Levy Mwanawasa Hospital will asking you around 12:34 hrs ‘’Upto now you have not gone ?” So commuters do not buy tickets immediately you arrive at the bus and those people sited are been used as decoy. Meaning that they pretend as if they are passengers when actually there call-boys. You can easily notice from head to legs. Go to Post Bus, Euro or Mazhandu. Call-boys are mainly contributor to the messing up of station. They drink beer, smoke marijuana, create confusion, urinate and shit near both Intercity and Railways stations. And they are also party cadres they shifted from MMD or PF recently.

Chembe is the last bus I can ever get on.
The owner is also unconcerned. Last year I was going to nakonde imagine I got the ticket in kitwe and left kitwe at 21hrs. We later had a breakdown in mpika around 6hrs.
The driver and his kaboyi decided to hire an open truck to ferry us but we all refused. By 14hrs we were still stuck in mpika because we were waiting for refunds which didn’t come, so some of us just left and we were promised by the driver that we can come and claim our refund in ndola. So when I went to ndola to get my refund I was told ati tatukwete indalama shenu kuno. I was only given my money after I threatened to call muvi tv. The owner of chembe and rk are foolish who can even think.
Please use euro, mazhandu, post, juldan not bafikala ba chembe

Chembe, marks, and these other useless buses like Quick travel tekwesha bane. I fell pray one day when I was travelin to kasama and was in kitwe as early as 10 am. Unfortunately, all the reliable buses were ie power tools, germins, and CV were fully booked and I had no choice but to follow one I’d!ot who said quick travel was only left with 4 pipo and I bot the ticket. Alas, the bus was no where to b seen until 2:40pm when they brought a Rosa, my foot! I got my refund and made connections. Why should they (bus operators) even want to protest when they hear about inter cape, tukabamona ba swine.

By the way, did you know where Chembe buys his fleet from? YES! The retired euro busses. Sad!

THESE BOYS CAME TO GRAB MY BAG N PLACED IT ON A BUS THAT WAS GOING TO ANOTHER DESTINATION THEN TRIED TO FORCE ME TO PURCHASE A TICKET THAT I DID NOT ASKED FOR. I TRIED REASONING WOTH THEM BUT SEEM NOT TO COOPERATE. I WAS GETTING SO FRASTURATED TO THE POINT OF FULLING OUT MY GUN! I WAS READY TO SHOT D ANIMALS IN D LEGS SO TO GET MY BAG. THANK GOODNESS FOR A BOY WORKING FOR JORDAN BUSES WHO RETRIEVED MY BAG N VOWED TO NEVER RETURN TO INTERCITY BUS STATION OTHERWISE I COULD HAVE KILLED SOME MOTHER ******!

Post bus only goes to Ndola and other towns but not Kitwe. We would really appreciate it if their would start going to Kitwe and other towns as well because they are also time buses. Intercity they should really improve the owner of the buses are the ones to blame.

You are not forced to jump on one bus company. Intercity has alot of choices and classic e.g. Mazhandu,Euro or Power tools next nothing other than these gon in town and Jump on the Post bus. CR is rotten and heads in inefficiency to all rubbish lavish busses. As for me it is either mazhandu, Euro or the powerful upcoming power tools.

I HAD A WORST TRIP NIGHTMARE AT THE HANDS OF CHEMBE BUS SERVICES LATE YEAR.I ACTUALLY BOUGHT MY TICKET AT AROUND 13:00HRS ONLY TO START OFF FOR CB AT 19:00HRS.IT TOOK US FOUR GOOD HOURS TO TRAVEL FROM LSK TO KABWE.JUST IMAGINE,ONLY TO REACH KITWE AT AROUND 03:00hrs.THE SAME SO CALLED BUS SERVICES HAS EVEN REDUCED THEIR FARE FROM NDOLA TO LSK FOUR A MERE 40PIN BUT STILL THE BUSES ARE NEVER FULL.TO ME,A BICYCLE IS BETTER THAN CHEMBE,EVEN AN OX-CART FROM MY VILLAGE IS A RELIABLE FORM OF TRANSPORT THAN CHI-CHEMBE.RUBBISH.KOPALA SWAGGER.

Be weary of some of these bus companies. They will be the first ones to cry foul and want to block companies like Inter cape who care for their customers want to come on board. Never be persuaded by those call boys who are paid to entice people to board these useless bus like who have no regard for the customer. It would be good if a deliberate law can be passed to charge such companies for cheating, this will protect the travelling public. Hats off to companies like Mazandu and Euro, they have respect for their clients, the crew is equally friendly
