Japan Gives Luapula Province $8 million For Water

THE Japanese government has committed US$8 million for the drilling of 200 boreholes in Luapula Province.
Japanese Ambassador to Zambia Akio Egawa disclosed this in Lusaka yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on Minister of Information and Broadcasting Kennedy Sakeni.
Mr Egawa said the gesture is aimed at supplementing Government efforts to provide clean drinking water.
“Japan appreciates the efforts Government is making to develop the country, with economic growth rate averaging 6 to 7 percent,” he said.
He commended the Patriotic Front administration and Zambians for continuing to foster peace, stability and democracy in Zambia.
Mr Egawa said this is evidenced by, among other attributes, the peaceful elections and smooth transition of power during last year’s tripartite elections which ushered the PF into power.
And Mr Sakeni, who is also Mansa Central member of Parliament, described Japan as an all-weather friend contributing immensely to Zambia’s development.
He said Japan’s assistance is tangible in Zambia, as evidenced by some key infrastructure the Asian country has helped to build in Zambia, in various sectors such as health, road and the media.
Mr Sakeni, who was flanked by his deputy Mwansa Kapeya, said Zambia, like Japan, remains committed to deepening cooperation in various fields for the benefit of the two countries.
“Most of the major roads in Lusaka, for example, have been done with the support of Japan. We are also humbled by your gesture to contribute to improving access to clean drinking water in various parts of the country,” he said.
