AGAINST the backdrop of rumours that the MMD is insolvent, Dr Nevers Mumba says his party is not broke because ‘well-wishers’ are still funding it.
And Dr Mumba says he is still friends with former president Rupiah Banda, contrary to what people may say.
“Some enemies of the party have gone on rampage to peddle lies that the MMD is broke and that RB and I are not in good books. He calls me. I call him,” Dr Mumba said.
The MMD president added: “I have never asked for money from the NEC (national executive committee) or RB (Rupiah Banda). Our well-wishers are still supporting us,” he said.
Dr Mumba said even if there were no funds in the MMD at the time he took over leadership, well-wishers have continued to support the MMD.
“We still have financial support. That is how we won the Muchinga by-election. We put in lots of millions, not mere rhetoric,” he said.
He was speaking yesterday at the opening of a three-day retreat in Lusaka aimed at rebranding the party.
Dr Mumba rallied members to sacrifice for the party as it is no longer in power.
He emphasised that the MMD is now truly an opposition party and cannot behave as though it is still in power.
“We can’t receive from the party anymore because we are no longer in government. We, therefore, need to sacrifice and give to the party,” Dr Mumba told NEC members gathered for the retreat at Kupark Lodge in Chilanga.
He said some members might feel that the party is asking for too much but that is the only way the MMD will achieve its vision as an opposition party.
He called on members to carry out “a brutal self-introspection”, saying Zambians are looking forward to seeing the MMD bounce back to power in 2016.
“We are the only hope Zambians have for now, so we must look at ourselves critically and deal with the perception of corruption,” Dr Mumba said.
He said until Zambians see a remorseful and better MMD, there’s no hope for the former ruling party.
“We have been perceived as a corrupt party but we need to change that perception,” Dr Mumba said.
He said most of the people that tainted the party with corruption have left and described the MMD as “the mother of democracy”.
Dr Mumba’s rivals for the MMD presidency, Felix Mutati, Enoch Kavindele, Moses Muteteka and Kapembwa Simbao, were not at the retreat.
But Kabinga Pande was there.
Other senior members present included Dora Siliya, Gabriel Namulambe, Suresh Desai and Maxwell Mwale.
The MMD leader also implored the party to have an open-door policy on membership.
“We were a closed shop but now that we are in the opposition, we should start receiving more members,” Dr Mumba said.
He said some of the MMD members serving as ministers in the PF government are merely waiting for the MMD to get organised, so that they can return.

ba Mumba, which financially powerful private company will fund your party??? Being in opposition requires sacrifice – MMD members are too greedy to give up their own stolen loot to finance the party. It is now ‘Bye bye MMD’ – never to resurrect. Even Liatp’s cash crops can’t save you.
African politicians do not plan for life after politics – once voted out of power their sole ambition is to get back into power. How about doing other respectable things – like the speaking circuit (like what the Blairs, Mandelas, Clintons of this world do). How about lecturing at UNZA to politics students, etc

Sorry Pastor, u are not a politician. U have potential to sink the MMD. Some professions require that u do away with the Pastor’s mind. U need to think about it.
