UPND chairperson for energy Garry Nkombo says the party will field a candidate in the forthcoming Mufumbwe parliamentary by-election set for November 8 because the MMD “stole” its seat.
Nkombo said in an interview in Mazabuka yesterday that the UPND had every right to contest the seat because his party was not in an alliance with the MMD.
“Yes, I can confirm that
the by-election might be a three party race together with the ruling Patriotic Front. As UPND we are going to contest the by-election and we are sure of winning because the seat was stolen from us by the MMD,” he said.
Nkombo said the political atmosphere currently favoured the UPND although the PF had also gained some pockets of support.
In 2010, the UPND won the Mufumbwe seat amid violent scenes by the ruling party then MMD.
However in last year’s election, the MMD reclaimed the seat from UPND.
On Friday last week, MMD president Nevers Mumba asked his UPND counterpart Hakainde Hichilema to do the right thing by allowing and supporting MMD to contest the Mufumbwe seat.
Both MMD and the UPND want the Mufumbwe seat which fell vacant following the former’s expulsion of its member of parliament Stephen Masumba for alleged gross indiscipline.
Mumba stressed that the question of who should field a candidate in Mufumbwe should not be premised on ‘ego trips’ or ‘on the so called more popular party claims’.
But FDD leader Edith Nawakwi On Tuesday advised Mumba that it was impossible for any political party to work with UPND under the leadership of Hichilema because the man was selfish and had an ego.
She explained that Hakainde’s ego dated back to 2006, where he wanted to field all the 150 candidates across the country even though they were in an alliance of a tripartite nature, where it was agreed that each political party including FDD, UPND and UNIP should field 50 candidates each.
“But by the time I turned around, they even attempted to take seats where we were even most popular, like you remember Nkana. You remember, Mr Kazabu was very popular. He should have been in Parliament way back in 2006. They even wanted to get rid of a candidate like for Chasefu, the vice president of FDD. Some of our councillors had to go out and stand on United Liberal Party. That is how self opinionated and selfish the young man is. He is a highly self constituted, self opinionated and selfish individual. He does not look at the broader picture of the common good he looks at his symbol. What drives him is his status and his ego to be big, if ego is not a big word itself,” said Nawakwi.
The MMD has argued that it was only logical that UPND left Mufumbwe for it but UPND claimed it was very strong in the area and deserved to contest the seat.
After the 2011 general elections, the MMD and UPND entered into a loose alliance to cooperate in elections. As a result, the MMD left the Livingstone seat, which it lost when its candidate Lukolo Katombora’s election was nullified by the High Court, to the UPND.
Mumba said that Hichilema was aware of what was at stake and that cooperating with the MMD was vital in the interest of future working relations.
This is not the first time UPND is differing with alliance parties over fielding of candidates.
In June 2010, UPND and PF had differences on who to field in Luena constituency in Western Province.
This was after Charles Milupi resigned his parliamentary seat as an independent to form the Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD).
This was despite both parties signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which stated that a party would only field parliamentary candidates in areas where they were strong.
In September 2010 again, the UPND and PF differed over who was supposed to field a candidate in Mpulungu constituency during a by-election. UPND insisted on fielding a candidate in Mpulungu despite the PF being popular and having come out second to MMD in earlier elections.
The UPND and PF had similar problems in fielding candidates in by-elections in Eastern Province and before last year’s general elections

Sons and daughters of the soil of Zambia. History has a way it repeats itself. When PF broke camp with UPND, all the fingers were pointed at Honourable Wynter Kabimba SC. All sorts of unprintables were heaped on Hon Kabimba. Today, Zambia is witnessing something that should guide as in future when we select the next President. It is clear that our friends in UPND are in a hurry to get to state house by hook or crook. Dr Mumba has been advised well by Nawakwi about the prson he is dealing with and Nawakwi has been insulted to the bone. Here is the defining moment for peace loving Zambians to know who HH does not respect anyone apart from himself. It goes to say that if tomorrow, he is a president, it will be the worst mistake for Zambians to make.
My advice still stand for well meaning Tongas to commission a search for a Tonga who can appeal to zambians. I still think Magande beats all the Tongas because of the record he has as Minister of Finance. HH has no record to refer to apart from slave wages he pays his workers.

The idea of having pacts as opposition is very ******. Every party should be free to field a candidate and gauge its strength. Hiding in false alliances is a waste of time. Zambian politicians, past and present and without exception, are greedy and selfish creatures.

UPND MAY HAVE THE SUPPORT OF TONGAS AND ASSOCIATED TRIBES THAT WANT TO ‘FIX’ OTHER TRIBES WHO ARE PERCEIVED TO HAVE OVER-STAYED IN POWER. BUT FOR THE MAJORITY OF PROGRESSIVE ZAMBIANS WHO HAVE NO TRIBAL PREJUDICE, I STRONGLY DOUBT IF THEY CAN GIVE A VOTE TO UPND UNDER HH WITH THEIR CURRENT ETHNIC ORIENTATION. MUGANDE WILL READILY BE ACCEPTED BY MAJORITY ZAMBIANS BECAUSE HE IS NOT BOUND BY PETTY TRIBAL CONSIDERATIONS

Good talk Trywell Chifita, advise even the Lozi people before it’s too late. HH is too stingy to rule this country and I will never give him those powers. I have consulted the Heavens and the answer to HH is NO!!!! Just continue with your business. UPND get Magande if you want anymore support from the bembas.

Who is Nawakwi for her to issue such unwarranted statements? The chap is full of bitterness about HH, she admires the billions HH has and wishes it was her who had them. Shame on her!!! Shame on Tumfweko!!!

I have a dream that one day PF will be led by Hamiyaze and UPND by Chibwe. When that happens tribalists like TRYWELL CHIFITA whose manifesto is the tribe shall have no say on this platform. Better days are coming. Magande has his own party TRYWELL OK. May be you were dead or in prison and have just come back to real life.

@Bawishi, I also wish I had HH’s kind of money but not his manners.
Nawakwi was right coz her word has come to pass. Nevers can learn from that. If he doesn’t, HH is sure to deliver more lessons to him before 2016.
as for Magande, the man can appeal to the masses much more than HH coz he has a proven track record in public service than HH whose public dormain came at the statement ‘ONLY A TONGA’ can lead the UPND at a time when Chisanga & Saki, the only available options.
These points, dear UPND, will always cast a shaddow at your party in the eyes of the Bembas and Lozis.

I WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE HH NOT TO BE BITTER BUT SHOW EXACTLY WHAT HE WANT TO DO FOR THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA. WE ARE NOT REFUSING HIM TO OPPOSE BUT NOT MAYOPICALLY. PLEAS BWANA HH RESPECT YOURSELF AND YOUR PARTY AND ALLOW YOUR MPS TO WORK FRRELY WITH THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DAY UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE OVERWHEMING MIKALI PRESIDENT. ALL WHAT WE NEED AS A COUNTRY IS DEVELOPMENT IN EVERY PART OF ZAMBIA BECAUSE WE ARE ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION AND NOT UNNECESSARILY CRITICISMS. TWAFWENI BA HH BA SIR.

Nevers Mumba is working for the PF already we know. All he wants is to disadvantage the opposition so that PF can win the seat and he will be rewarded again just like before to serve in government.

In UPND we are about strengthening the opposition so that the guys in governm, ent can deliver. we are not even in a hurry to state house because we know one day the masses will get fed up of lies and put a real government in place.
