THE Kitwe baby swap saga has taken a new spin with the ‘mother’ of the baby girl declaring that she is dumping her at the nearest health center or hospital following authorities’ failure to locate her real baby – a boy.
The woman of Kitwe’s Buchi –Kamitondo Township told the Sunday Mail that she is tired of pretending to be the mother of a baby girl that is not hers while she spends sleepless nights wondering whether he real baby is alive or dead in a bizarre story that sounds stranger than fiction.
Ann Mweshi Mwanza, 18, said: “My experience as a mother has been painful. I gave birth to a male child but I ended up with a female child…don’t know how I ended up with a female child. I will return this baby to Buchi clinic where I gave birth from.”
The young house wife who bravely fought back tears during the interview with the Sunday Mail complained that, “authorities from Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH) are not giving me enough support to determine the true parentage of the child. I have been moving from one office to another to try and resolve this problem but there is no progress on the matter.”
Mwanza, of house number 1485 Buchi-Kamitondo, said a request to officially dispel the fact that the girl is not her baby via a DNA have been resisted by the KCH hospital management and seemingly little help has come from the police.
Trouble for Mrs Mwanza started on August, 23, 2012, around 18:00 hours in the evening when she delivered and was handed a baby boy.
She recalls how elated she was by the news of siring a boy but later slipped into sleep due to excessive post-delivery bleeding and waking up to a nightmare of having a baby girl she could not recognise but was handed over to her by authorities when she woke up.
She noticed the change in sex as she was rushed to KCH due to an unfortunate power failure at Buchi clinic.
Exactly a day later she woke up to the sound of a crying baby that was not hers turning her world upside down and inside out, a typical mother’s nightmare.
This is what Mrs Mwanza recalls of the ordeal: “the woman who gave me my baby while at KCH was wearing a blue uniform, a trousers and a top…she was fat and dark in completion and she also wore a shower cap but I could not identify her by name.”
The distraught mother said, “I asked her to bring the baby so that I could see it since I had regained strength when I heard it cry. The baby was in a blue showel, which was mine so I had nothing to worry about like immediately check the sex.”
Everything appeared alright according to Mrs Mwanza, until her grandmother pointed out that the baby was a girl and not a boy while changing napkins.
Her whole world started closing in after the discovery and her marriage to Mr Wekisted Mwanza, a footballer at Kitwe United has not been left unscathed.
Mrs Mwanza has complained about continued resistance from the hospital and the police compelling her to breastfeed the baby, whom she has since named Ronica. No one has come up to claim baby Ronica while the police and hospital authorities have chosen to leave all matters to Mrs Mwanza and her husband. And the plot just thickens for baby Ronica, who has developed a growth on the navel which needs to be operated on by December according to Mrs Mwanza but this may not happen because she is unwilling to sign consent forms for a baby that is not hers.
Mr Mwanza, who has equally been affected by the loss of his son, complained about the hospital and police saying, “the hospital are requesting us to get a report from the police addressed to them that a DNA should be conducted, why can’t they go to the police themselves?”
A police report dated October 3, 2012, signed by the chief investigations officer at Riverside police, a Mr E Kosamu, a DNA test was recommended to determine whether the baby is the Mwanza’s or not.
The report, which was availed to the Sunday Mail by Mr Mwanza further states that his wife gave birth in a room which had insufficient light and that it could have been difficult to determine the sex of the child.
Another report dated September 7, 2012 and signed by KDHMT director Dr Chikafuna Banda suggests that while at KCH, the baby was never separated from the mother.
“All of them [nurses] did not do observations on the baby while the mother was admitted at KCH. However, the baby was throughout the time kept in the same room with the mother through on the resusitaire until discharge,” the report reads in part.
And in a letter written to Mr Mwanza by KCH, the health institution proposed that a DNA test should be conducted to determine the parentage of the child.
The letter dated September 6, 2012 and signed by KCH public relations officer Grey Chishimba states that when Mrs Mwanza was referred to KCH, she was taken to Luena ward together with the baby and that the referral notes and the birth records from Buchi Clinic indicated that the baby was male.
Even though the hospital authorities suggest that the baby could be the Mwanza’s, a letter written by them admits that “no physical verifications was done by both parties from the clinic and the hospital on the baby because it was in good health and that all it needed was warmth.
In the absence of a DNA test, the true parentage of baby Ronica, whom the mother wants to dump shall remain unknown.Mystery continues to surround the whereabouts of the Mwanza’s ‘missing’ son, whom the two swear they sired.

DNA test will review that the baby is the woman’s but not the man’s. It happened in Lusaka recently, remember? Just keep the baby and the marriage.

This trend of baby swapping has become so rampant in these zambia’s hell hospital.wats the motive behind the scene? All nurse and medical officers should be investigated and establish where they take (the switched at birth babies go) before another swap happens.how many baby swapping that has gone unnoticed?

That is why its also important to check the sex of the Baby when in antinental. This wasn’t going to happen. Anyway, DNA will prove the footballer is responsible for that child but not with that woman……..!!!

My baby girl was born kumangalande.
when the baby was born the mid -wife right away wrapped a wristband sealed with her mame in my presence, which i only took off after we were discharged from the hospital. My daughter is now 20yrs young and we still have her hospital name tag from all those years ago neatly kept in her baby album. If such simple procedures are followed none of these baby swapping nightmares would happen.

IF THE LADY KEEPS THAT BABY, SHE IS NOT GOING TO HAVE TRUE LOVE FOR THE BABY. IT IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE CLICKING IN HER MIND THAT THE BABY IS NOT FOR HER ESPECIALLY THAT THE SEX IS DIFFERENT. SHE NEEDS COUNCIL IF SHE IS TO KEEP THE BABY. LET THE HOSPITAL CLEAR THE ISSUE PROFESSIONALLY SO THAT THE BABY WILL BE LOVED.
