CHAMPIONS Zambia are in Group C at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals, while hosts South Africa are in Group A.
According to the procedure of drawing lots of the Africa Cup of Nations released by the Condeferation of African Football yesterday, South Africa and Zambia will respectively have letters A1 and C1 on the board.
“In conformity with the regulations of the competition, South Africa the host team shall be the top seeded team of Group A and Zambia the titleholders will be the top seeded team of Group C,” the procedure of the draw reads.
The draws will be conducted next Wednesday in Durban, South Africa.
Points are awarded for performances in previous three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments with seven for winners, five for runners-up, three for semi-finalists, two for quarter-finalists and one for teams eliminated in the first round.
Ghana and Ivory Coast are the other teams in Pot 1 and will be the top seeded teams of groups B and D.
“Stage 1 of the draw will be to do an integral draw to determine which of these two teams shall be awarded the letter B1 and which one will have the letter D1,” the procedure of the draw reads.
Ivory Coast finished runners-up to Zambia at this year’s tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon while Ghana finished fourth after losing 0-2 to Mali in the third place playoff.
Pot Two has Angola, Mali Nigeria and Tunisia while Algeria, Burkina Faso, Morocco and Niger are in Pot Three.
Cape Verde, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Togo are in Pot Four.
Meanwhile, VICTOR KUMWENDA reports that Democratic Republic of Congo coach Claude Le Roy has tipped Zambia to be among the favourites to win the 2013 Africa Cup.
Le Roy told France 24.com that despite the Chipoloppolo’s unimpressive performance in the two-legged qualifier against Uganda they are still the team to beat at the finals in South Africa.
Zambia beat Uganda 9-8 on penalties last Saturday after tying 1-1 on aggregate after two legs.
Le Roy, who is Chipolopolo coach Herve Renard’s mentor, said the African champions are now a much stronger side and the depth in their squad makes them to be among the favourites.
He, however, said it will not be easy for Zambia to repeat the splendid performance exhibited in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
Le Roy said Didier Drogba-led Ivory Coast’s golden generation has the last chance to win the elusive continental trophy.
Zambia beat Ivory Coast 8-7 to win the maiden African title on February 12, 2012 in Libreville.

Zambia need to wake up from ‘AFCON 2012 Winners’ slumber. In my own understanding nobody is now counting on Zambia as potential 2013 winners due to their recent poor showing in the qualifiers. If I was Renard I would begin by studying all comments that have come from soccer fans regarding players. And from there do some permutations to come up with a new team that will be all inclusive. Names like Singuluma and Clifford stand out to be ignored though Clifford’s face clearly spells some sort of indiscipline.

It simply means that we will play the teams that will be drawn in Pot D at the quarter Final stage. This will either be Ivory Coast or Ghana.
The South Africans have started manipulating the situation, They will avoid Zambia as much as possible. They have distanced Zambia so much that if we have to meet them somehow it has to be at the Semi-final stage. They manipulated the 1996 AFCON draws so much that they ensured we never met them. They also ensured that we were shunted from one venue to another, from a high attitude to a lwo attitude, then back to a high attitude and so on and so forth. The flights were so complicated that we hardly had any time to rest before we played and lost to Tunisia in the semi-final.
I can’t wait to see who we may meet in the quarters, but it is already clear that it may be Ghana or Ivory Coast or any members from their pots.

Why group C and not B as defending champions? Just wondering….Ideally it should have been hosts-group A, defending champions group B full stop

Will go and defend the trophy, qualifiers are abit hard compared to the tournament. We just need to rekindle that zeal and fighting spirit we showed at 2013 Afcon competition. And Renard consider other Zambian players that are inform, its very possible that the same players we had in Gabon would be fit come SA Afcon in jan. By the way Fwayo Tembo is one of players thats doing fine in Europe. Go Z go.

Let us go chipolopolo. We have to meet the best in early stages when we are still energetic and then have it easy in the final.Harmer anyone who comes your way.

It doesn’t matter who we play,to be champions you have to beat whoever is in front of you and to all those doubting this team based on their recent perfomances in qualification should take a leaf from the last world cup where the Italians who had all sorts of difficulties in qualifying went on to reach the final whilst England who had a 100% winning record in qualification where knocked out in the group stages!

The standard of playing has gone down 4 the champions. If we r 2 defend the title lets improve on the field. The last 2 to 3 games that we played havent been impresive.

@bazamuka-I also thot champions wil be in group B to allow hosts group A. Manipulations are truly at play. Whichever way, we are going to RSA to correct the history of 1996

It is good that Zambia did not expose herself so that most of the coaches can start strategising who to mark and the like. Remember, last tournament Zambia was completely written off and declared underdog. It is a plus for Zambia and will come out a victor in the 2013 tournament. Watch out all of you that are condeming and underating Zambia. I am confident Zambia will retain the Cup because the team players are unpredictable.
