State Engages Experts On School Leavers’ ZNS Programme

GOVERNMENT has engaged a team of experts to study the process of re-introducing mandatory Zambia National Service (ZNS) skills training for school leavers.

Youth and Sport Minister, Chishimba Kambwili said the process of re-introducing the mandatory training would not be rushed as it needed to be handled cautiously.

“We want to avoid doing things hurriedly, that is why we have engaged a team of experts or consultants to help us with the process,” Mr Kambwili said.

The re-introduction of the ZNS mandatory training for youths will start with the 2013 Grade 12 school leavers.

About K100 billion had been allocated for the refurbishment of ZNS infrastructure that would host the youth.

Mr Kambwili said his ministry had already issued a Cabinet memorandum for Cabinet approval.

A team of experts would fine-tune all aspects of re-introducing the ZNS training.

The training was aimed at equipping youths with survival skills.

The programme would not have an intense military component that was undertaken during the UNIP Government.

Trainees would be expected to spend 18 months at the ZNS camps before enrolling for further education in tertiary institutions.

The last crop of school leavers to undergo ZNS training during the UNIP era was in 1980.

Mr Kambwili said youths would receive training in various fields including carpentry, welding, and automotive mechanics.

The minister said the move was aimed at equipping school leavers with various skills to cope with life’s challenges and use them for entrepreneurship.

He said this would assist in addressing unemployment levels in the country.

Mr Kambwili expressed confidence that the skills training programme would act as an empowering tool for the youth across the country.

Parents of the children must consent before their children are forcibly taken for national service.
In short it cannot be forced on those that do not want to attend natinal service as that is not backed by any law in this country.

Interesting observation there! We are not a communist state, and the current constitution does not provide for forced recruitment of school-leavers into such undertakings. I’m glad we still have people who can see things with reality eyes!

these survival skills must be taught from primary school instead of waiting after secondary school.teaching some body,[ who has already qualified to study medicine ,law, enginnering etc,] is in my opinion a waste of resources.

Its not forcily ! Its mandetory. Iwe communist preacher.wautwa wena sitimbi tuwe? There is uncountable good figure of unemployeed levels of youth in zambia,80% are novice and unskilled.not many have attended grade 1 to 7.they wil start with 2013 school leavers and all grade 5 to 7 and those who cant read and write and no one wil be sideline .hon. kambwili ‘s stance on youth survival skill should not be misunderstood and critised. In recent education curriculum such topics are available presently, this one is new with technical expperts researching around. do u mean the pf boma should registar 30yrz old youth 4 primary and secondary school 4 zns self sustainable life entrprenueship skills in grade one.think deep before u post your comments

another team of experts should be appointed to review the zambian curriculum,
review should consider specialisation form grade ten to twelve ,school leavers should finish with a career certificate of specialisation either in
    - carpentry
    - mining
    - pre school teaching
meaning when a person qualifies to go for form three he should select among the courses of interst (3 years) is weathy a diploma ,why finish school with a useless certificate

    let change country men

We need to overhaul the whole education system! There should be more emphasis in the identification of skills, attitudes, knowledge as early as grade six. Children should then be streamlined to do what they have an aptitude for. The current scenario where a child does 12 subjects is a hit or miss kind of thinking and very achaic. We cannot all be bricklayers, tailors, tie and dye artists bla bla bla! if anything, we are lacking critical thinkers…people who are concerned with creativity, production, savings, assett building etc. The majority of us are taught to be consumers only….this must change, otherwise we will still be confined to dark ages. I went for national service…but the whole thing was very wasteful…those who went will agree with me!
