THE winner of an on-going MTN competition escaped death when his prized Toyota Corolla crashed on the Great North Road in an accident that left one passenger dead.
MTN competition winner Emmanuel Bwembya of Kasama and driver of the car Prince Chiluba escaped unhurt but Abby Simbeye, 28, died on the spot in Serenje when the car careered off the road and overturned.
Bwembya of Mulenga Hill in Kasama won the car on October 19.
Police assistant spokesperson Esther Mwaata-Katongo said the accident happened on Saturday around 09:25 hours in Chikubula area about 30kms from Serenje.
Ms Mwaata-Katongo said in an interview yesterday that the vehicle was being driven by Mr Bwembya’s nephew Chiluba, 25, of Bauleni in Lusaka.
Simbeye was from Chiba village in Chief Mwamba’s area in Kasama. His body is in Serenje District Hospital mortuary.
Ms Mwaata-Katongo identified other passengers as Abraham Mumbi, 32, and Marvelous Kafwanka, 32, of Location in Kasama who are nursing injuries.
“The accident happened when the driver, Mr Chiluba, failed to negotiate a curve and the car careered off the road and overturned, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged…Mr Bwembya and the driver escaped unhurt,” she said.
She said the driver is currently in detention and has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
In another incident, Ms Mwaata-Katongo said an 80-year-old man has died after falling off a moving vehicle in Mongu. The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, was driven by Rodgers Nawa, 32, of Mongu.
She said the accident happened around 19:50 hours opposite Mongu village near Kaande Basic School.
She identified the deceased as Njekwa Liyamba of Sikalelo village in Chief Mukulwambula in Mongu.
“The man is said to have been drunk and just jumped off the vehicle. They were coming from campaigns for a by-election in Nampula ward which is situated off the Lusaka-Mongu road,” she said.

Too bad!!
May his soul rest in peace, BUT hey please MTN provide qualified drivers to deliver those cars to destinations where the winner is caming from, it may happen that a winner do not have enough money to hire a qualified driver and opts for cheaper ones and now this is the result! its very unfortunate! please mtn save lives and do just that!!!!!!

A TIMELY ADVICE TO MTN MANAGEMENT:
Please provide car delivery services up to destination where the winner resides or alternatively hire qualified drivers to deliver the remaining 70+ cars inorder to save people’s lives.
