A suspected mentally ill patient of Kitwe was on yesterday afternoon stoned to death by angry residents after he stabbed three people with a knife one of whom died.
Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela in a statement released to QFM News says the incident happened around 15:00 hours at the market area in Wusakile township.
Ms Kanjela says Joe Buka attacked a woman and started beating her with a plank, and when some people tried to stop him, he pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed three of them.
She says Lenard Banda aged 28 of house No.C5-233 Wusakile was stabbed in the stomach forcing his intestines to come out.
Ms Kanjela says the victim was later rushed to Kitwe Central Hospital where he died upon arrival.
She says also stabbed was Victor Kalombo of house No.D35 Wusakile who sustained cuts on his back and Sai Mwansa of unknown address who sustained deep cuts on both hands and are both admitted to Kitwe Central Hospital.
Ms Kanjela explains that the mob later stoned Joe to death and that his body is in Kitwe Central hospital.

I agree with you my brother/sister Mwashi. It is quite frightening to live around with people who are mentally unstable and disturbed because their next actions are quite unpredictable. Can the government devise some policy regarding the mentally sick roaming the streets.

I agree and appreciate the balanced comments made by the above bloggers. I salute you, dear friends. There is need for close monitoring of the mentally challenged brothers and sisters, since they are not in their full senses, or operating with an informed conscience. My condolences to the family that has lost our brother..

All the Insane, Mad, Menally disordered people must be caged in one place and be thrown one by one into a crocodiles infested rivers, at least once in year on a special day which should be called “Zambian Freedom Day”. Government trophies are ever on empty bellies resulting into attacks on innocent, healthy and productive people.

The Zambian govt should be ashamed of it self for allowing vulnerable pipo roaming the streets. Am shocked that this incident can happen in my country at this day and age.The Minister of health should do
something about mental health services. its like living in the stone age

Mad or normal a woman can drive a man mad. Does anybody know what sparked the attack on the woman?

Let us reactivate ground-up initiatives as opposed to looking to a central entity (so-called government, aka Lusaka-based politicians) to tell us what to do. I have always advocated for a society-based consensus building approach because areas and economic and social realities are different. Based on this attack (and a few that may have gone unreported) it would be great to brainstorm measures that will indeed bring about the protection of both the mentally challenged people of varying degrees and the rest of society.

Its like there is an upswing of mental patients on the street. What’s really happening to this country. This should be addressed seriously by the pf government & rehabilitate these pipo. Some have brilliant brains which can develop this nation. Specialist psychiatrists(Doctors) should rise to the occasion instead of globe trotting attending seminars.
