Well Done, SATA tells Chipolopolo
President Michael Sata has congratulated the Zambia national soccer team for winning the Nelson Mandela Challenge in Johannesburg.
In his message to the team, President Sata said he is elated that Zambia has continued to galvanise its status as African champions by beating South Africa.
Zambia edged South Africa 1-0 on Wednesday night to win the 18th edition of the Nelson Mandela Challenge at the 94,000 capacity Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.
“In February, you made the country proud when you deservingly muscled your way to the pinnacle of African football and you have been worthy ambassadors ever since. Keep the candle burning,” President Sata said.
He said the victory, which comes about two months before the Chipolopolo begin their defence for the trophy, should motivate the team to believe in themselves and work even harder ahead of the biennial tournament, which South Africa will host.
“As we watched you on Wednesday night, we could see your bravery, sense your humility and feel your patriotism in making Zambia proud. You did it with marked distinction,” the President said.
The President urged the squad to work hard to defend the Africa Cup title, which he said the other 15 competing countries will be yearning to grab from Zambia. He recommitted himself and Government to the development of football.
