Contrary to popular belief, the full moon does not increase the incidence of psychological problems, researchers have revealed.
A team of researchers directed by Professor Genevieve Belleville of Universite Laval’s School of Psychology examined the relationship between the moon’s phases and the number of patients who show up at hospital emergency rooms experiencing psychological problems.
To determine whether the widespread belief linking the moon to mental health problems was true, researchers evaluated patients who visited emergency rooms at Montreal’s Sacre-Coeur Hospital and Hotel-Dieu de Levis between March 2005 and April 2008.
They focused specifically on 771 individuals who showed up at the emergency room with chest pains for which no medical cause could be determined.
Psychological evaluations revealed that a sizeable number of these patients suffered from panic attacks, anxiety and mood disorders, or suicidal thoughts.
Using lunar calendars, the researchers determined the moon phase in which each of these visits occurred.
The results of their analyses revealed no link between the incidence of psychological problems and the four lunar phases.
There was one exception, however; anxiety disorders were 32 per cent less frequent during the last lunar quarter.
“This may be coincidental or due to factors we did not take into account,” Belleville said.
“But one thing is certain: we observed no full-moon or new-moon effect on psychological problems,” she said.
The study’s conclusions run contrary to what many believe, including 80 per cent of nurses and 64 per cent of doctors who are convinced that the lunar cycle affects patients’ mental health.
“We hope our results will encourage health professionals to put that idea to rest,” Belleville said.
“Otherwise, this misperception could, on the one hand, color their judgment during the full moon phase; or, on the other hand, make them less attentive to psychological problems that surface during the remainder of the month,” she added.
The study is published on the website of the scientific journal General Hospital Psychiatry.

Certain form of madness is spiritual, ordinary mind will not understand this. 1 Cor 1 v 18 – to the end. There certain form madness which are self induced and others are out of sickness of the brain while other are demonic attack. So to say that all maner of mental disorder are not demonic attack is to call Jesus as a liar. Remain with your science. A certain woman, in my neighbourhood during my teen, @ full moon she will become crazy and beatup people for no appparent reason men even if they are more than 8 could not subdue her, police men about 6 of them were mercilesly beaten by this woman she would be breathing heavily speak in a male deep voice. No one would dare come near her until such a time when the moon dissapeared. This is not fiction but the truth we used to witness ku nkungulume Luanshya some time around late 60s and early 70s. So what can a scientist say about such situations. He said it that” I will frustrate the wise….” read 1 Cor 1 v 19.

What is madness?it is when one gives a response which is very far away from the question.eg someone asks,do moon phases affect madness ?and some lunatic raises up his hand and answers Chipimo,Sata,HH,Lozis or Tonga.Anyway whether these docs agree or disagree Mental related disorders are at thier peak during the full moon.It may be a belief .Ok Mental issues due to narcotics are nt affected by nature. Those guys did the tests on mentally depraved Junkies and reached a loopsided conclusion.eish!

Doesnt the moon have an effect on water levels on earth thus bringing us low and high tide? Doesn’t this include the water levels inside everything on earth including a human being?
