The Truth About Clive Chirwa’s Parents

Professor Clive Chirwa

Dear Editor,
I WANT to correct what I believe are factual errors given by Features Writer (Times of Zambia, November 19, 2012) concerning Professor Clive Chirwa’s background. The Features Writer reports that Clive Chirwa’s mother, Tody, also comes from Eastern Province.

According to the information I have, Clive Chirwa’s mother. Agatha Mwamba, is evidently not from Eastern Province. In one article in the online magazine, UKZAMBIANS (June 26 2012), in which Clive Chirwa argued the case for dual citizenship, this is what he said about his background:

“If I was born three centuries ago in Central Africa, I would have been recognised to possess multi-citizenships as a Chewa (Jus sanguinis) through my father, as a Bemba (Jus sanguinis) through my mother and as a Lamba (Jus soli) since I was born in Mufulira and just being a Mufken.”

Further investigation reveals that Clive Chirwa’s father, Eford Noah Chirwa Sr, from Nyanda Village in Chipata moved to the Copperbelt with his parents Yona Kavilaba and Esnart Mukalimo where they were offered employment at Bwana Mukubwa Mines in Ndola. After a number of years of schooling, Clive’s father moved out of the family house in Ndola and started working first in Chingola and then settled in Mufulira. It is while in Mufulira when he met Clive’s mother, Agatha Mwamba.

This isssue of dual citizenship is very serious, if we are to attain any maeningful and evident development then it should proceed as planned.
Prior to the independence of Zambia people moved freely across borders. With sovereignity
challenges of the 21st Century, SADC is moving closer into a global village.
Zambia is 48 lets not lose out of valued human resource just because someone is not a so called ‘son of the soil’.

I hope you are not the Dr Lemba Musonda, Demographer that i know from Unza! I have said this because i knew you as a distinguished scholar who can not waste his time on such a non issue!
Ba Lemba please leave those small issues to characters like Janet C and concentrate on your usual staff such as SS 241/242, DE 111/112, DE 411/412 and other critical social and demographic research!

Tell him how the populations along the line of rail should be impacted,or have been impacted previously or some environmental assessment as a result of his proposed developments….something like that…do I have to think for you all the time..sis

If you listen to him carefully he has a deep french lingala accent gained while he stayed with his mum in lubumbashi.

Academics believe in getting to the nitty gritty of things. Whatever you state must be proved. That is their job. Dr Lemba is just sticking to his job: clarifying things even if you may not consider these things as important. You are certainly dumb. A lot of us, including myself are mixed bloods, with my mother and father from different tribes and provinces. I personally know Dr. Lemba; he is actually a mixed guy, born and brought up on the Copperbelt. I suspect you are one of those unmixed type who came to Lusaka for the first from some rural outpost. I pity guys like you.
