For the first time in Zambia since recorded history, TANZANIA Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) cargo trains have not been moving since last month due to shortage of fuel.
Workers Union of TAZARA acting general secretary Josam Nkhoma confirmed in an interview yesterday that cargo movement had been suspended, leaving only passenger trains operating between Kapiri Mposhi and Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania.
He said the company had been failing to raise 150, 000 litres of fuel required to run both the cargo and passenger train services.
“The company is only able to raise about 10,000 litres which is only enough for two locomotives instead of the 150,000 litres needed to cater for all the locomotives.
“Ideally, a transporting company should not run out of fuel but this is not the case with TAZARA,” he said.
TAZARA managing director Akashambatwa Mbikusita-Lewanika admitted in a separate interview that the company had continued to face challenges in meeting operational expenditures, including payments for fuel and salaries.
TIMES OF ZAMBIA
its a very sad development.
So it is not fuel shortage but the company having no cash to buy readily available fuel?
Sad indeed and the director of tazara has got a big task and challenge so sort.it looks grievous to compare 10.000lts of fuel to 150.000lts required 4 the smooth operation to an intelligent director.it’s important to turn to alternative solutions and diversication on an shortage of fuel and meal meal.in any case bring electric locomotive and passanger trains which cheap and effiecent to maintain and service.the relevamt authority must go back to the drawing board and do the caculation and utilise the fable.
Tumfweko its not about fuel shortage its about not having enough cash to buy required operational litres of diesel thats why even employees have been running without salaries for some months, your title is very misleading.
Shortage of fuel and inability 2 buy fuel ar 2 different things
But management still get heavy
Allowances . Put business first and
Allowances later. Sad reading to

Ths is wht happens whn u fill mjr positns wth glutons. Fire them, resolve management on tboth sides, and restructure. Both Zambia and Tanzania service delivry is poor, ths 2 countries lack collaboratn, thr is no ujama in thr practice…tazara tanzania is somethng else and zambian side is anothr.. Restructure managemnt,gt new bord, new MD and revise rates, offr quality service, and yes improve on ur locomotives…go electrical…r u tellng us tht u pipo r running on hand to mouth,no savings,no reserves?what a shame for a long term running org.like tazara
TAZARA SYSTEM SHOULD BE COMPUTERIZED GOODS HAVE BEEN TRANSPORTED ON CREDIT AND FUEL ARE BEING BOUGHT AT HIGHER PRICE CA– USE BY CORRUPTION POLICY TAZARA TO SURVIVE IS DIFFICULT
