Kasama Taxi Drivers Hike Fares By 100% Due To Poor Roads

Taxi drivers in Kasama have hiked fares for Chisanga village route due to the bad state of the road.

Concerned Chisanga residents have revealed to ZANIS today that fares have been hiked from KR20 to KR 40.

Speaking on behalf of other residents, Simon Chungu revealed that motorists have attributed the hiking of fares due to bad state of the road leading to Chisanga village from the town centre.

Mr Chungu has since called on relevant authorities to quickly work on the road before the situation is worsened.

He observed that the road which also leads to the health facility becomes impassable especially when it rains.

He said authorities should quickly work on the road because motorists are taking advantage of the bad state of the road to inflate prices.

And a taxi driver Derrick Banda has appealed to the Rural Road Unit (RRU) to urgently work on the road before lives are lost.

Mr Banda who was found struggling to remove his vehicle which was stuck in the mud for over two hours was on his way taking an expectant mother to Kasama General Hospital.

He said the patient was only rescued by another motorist who rushed her to Kasama General Hospital.

Mr Banda observed that most roads in Kasama have developed big pot holes due to poor drainage.

He called on Rural Roads Unity to consider putting up good drainage system which in most cases leads to many roads getting damaged before their life span.

Efforts to get a comment from the Rural Roads Unity office failed as the phone went un-answered by press time.
