Police Unfairnes Disappoint NAREP

PRESS STATEMENT – 19 FEbruary 2013
ON POLICE UNFAIRNESS IN INTER-PARTY CONFLICTS IN BY-ELECTIONS
By Rev. Jevan Kamanga  –
NAREP Copperbelt Provincial Coordinator

As NAREP Copperbelt, we very disappointed by the way Zambia Police Service
is handling these inter-party conflicts in Mpongwe and Livingstone
by-elections.

There seems to be an unprofessional way of handling disputes and conflicts
between political parties. Overwhelming evidence is there which proves that
regardless of the many offences being perpetrated by PF cadres, the Police
seem to be shielding and protecting them. This is very unfair.

Our Candidate in Mpongwe, Mr. Reagan Ndhlovu is appearing in court for
offences that are not clear while a UPND cadre in Livingstone is behind
bars because he was accused of tearing a PF chitenge material. What
happened in Mpongwe between PF and UPND cadres yesterday at the police
station and aired on ZNBC Main NEWS is another clear example of the Police
unfairness in handling inter-party conflict. How many times have the PF
cadres been caught tearing posters, tearing MMD chitenge materials or even
dressing dogs with such? What have the Police done? Nothing. When PF cadres
abrogate the law, the police are giving it a blind eyes.

We want to appeal to the Zambia Police Service and to its Inspector
General, Stella Libongani to conduct themselves fairly when dealing with
cadres of the various political parties in the by-elections in Livingstone
and in Mpongwe. The people are watching and will judge you strongly. We
don’t need to educate you on what role the Police Service and not Police
Force play in maintaining peace, order and unity in Zambia.

It is sad that this is happening and if what I am reading is true. There is need to change the trend because we still remember that the MMD had turned the police to be a tool to silence people who had divergent views. So it isnt surprising that the same way of doing buiness has continued. I wouldnt want to bring the name of the President in ths because the police do not get instructions from him but would urge the relevant authorities to look into it so that the name of PF isnt scandalised and that people do not start to think there is no change. MMD, have you seen now that what you did is hauting you.You used the police to protect your cadres and no MMD cadre at the time faced the law. At the tym you said the Police was professional. What has changed now? There is need for people to be objective, we want peaceful elections. The issues of cadres removing campaign materials should be condemned by right thinking zambian. That candidate who slapped someone in the presence of police should be disciplined, that cadre who tore the PF chitenge material deserves to be behind bars and if a PF cadre is found destroying campaign materials for the opposition, they should be arrested and put behind bars. The is no sacred cow… natural justice

It is indeed very sad, but we all know that systems have been changing whilst the police Conduct is the same. “New” old Faces are being promoted believing things have changed.
Once the new constitution is in place we need all these officers retired and immediately bring in new faces to turn around the policing system. We are all zambians so we need be treated equally by law enforcing staff. Talk of Corruption at Road blocks just after the terrible accident we experienced recently cops were still busy oiling their fingers between Kabwe -Lusaka, the whole system is rotten to the Core and just needs to be uprooted. Shame on ZP.
