Nkana Installs CCTV To Battle Hooliganism

Nkana installs CCTV to clampdown on its notorious fans and vandals following a US$450,000 makeover of Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

Nkana return home this season after a year-long stadium facelift that forced them to host their guests across the road at archrivals Power Dynamos home-base of Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

The record 11-time Zambian league champions have over the last eight years been blighted with stadium bans at Nkana Stadium due to crowd trouble.

Club chairperson John Chiwele said during the reopening of the stadium in Kitwe on Wednesday that he hoped Nkana fans will portray a refreshing image after year-long rehabilitation works at Nkana Stadium.

“People don’t come to games to cause trouble,” Chiwele said.

“Very few people come to games to cause confusion so it will probably take one or two examples and we intend to maintain discipline here.

“When we are playing at home we want to make it a day event where one can come with their wives, with their husbands, with your kids to watch a game in peace and where they are no people insulting.”

Nkana Stadium has been a cauldron of hooliganism from the day they were demoted for the first time-ever in 2004 until their eventual return to the Super Division in 2010.

In 2005 alone, referees were assaulted in two separate incidents in home games including one incident in an away match before the Football Association of Zambia banned them from playing games in Kitwe for a season.

Violence erupted again in 2007 and Nkana were handed a 13 month ban.

Trouble flared-up yet again in 2011 and the team was banished to play all their games outside Kitwe for the remainder of the season.
