Child Dies After undergoing Tradtional Operation

A six-month-old baby of Ndola that bled to death after its grandmother decided to cut off the vein under its tongue, commonly known as Akalimba using a razor blade.
This was in an attempt to prevent the baby from suffering a life-long speech impairment as culturally believed.
The incident, according police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela, took place on Saturday around 07:30 hours in Ndola’s Mushili Kansengu.
“Facts of the matter are that the grandmother of the child suspected that it had what is commonly known as Kalimba, a situation that is believed to lead to speech impeachment. Culturally, such a problem entails the cutting of the vein just below the tongue,” Ms Kanjela said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday.
Ms Kanjela said: “The grandmother took the child to a neighbour to have the child worked on. A razor blade was used in the act and unfortunately, the child bled to death.
“The body of the baby is lying in the Ndola General Hospital mortuary while the grandmother of the child and the neighbour, Ademia Mbewe, are in police custody to help with investigations

We are tired of too many “May His Soul Rest in Peace” on the site today!… just lock the granny’s assss in prison for 2nd degree murder, the neighbour also for the same count but lesser term. By the way that culture has been there for so many decades in mostly Bemba and Ngoni cultures, she just didnt do it properly.

Leave the old woman alone. That operation has been there since time immemorial. According to sensible neighbors, the woman has performed that operation on many children who are now talking properly. It was just unfortunate that particular kid died. If it had died after a conventional operation in a hospital we wouldn’t even have heard of it. Mwanyela kuntulo ya kamana, twalamona nomba uku mwakulatwala abana bachibulu.
