Lusaka Woman Drags Lover To Court For Failing to Fulfill Marriage Promise

By EVELYN MBEWE

A TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD woman of Lusaka’s Lilayi Township has sued her lover for not fulfilling his promise to marry her after the two stayed together for four years.

Charity Lisebele, 28, sued White Mwanza, 29, for failing to marry her even after the duo had a child in their four-year relationship.

Facts before the court were that Lisebele knew Mwanza in 2009 and she was impregnated while in the relationship.

Lisebele told magistrate Ng’andwe Mukuka that they knew each other when Mwanza was working in Lilayi before he moved to Chisamba where he found a new job.

“When he found a job in Chisamba, he used to come to Lilayi and he was spending nights in my house which he was renting for me,” she said.

Lisebele said Mwanza promised her that he would marry her once his contract was over in Chisamba because it was only for a year.

She said after a year, he did not return, she decided to go and ask him why he was not returning to Lilayi so that they could be married as per promise.

Lisebele said when she reached his workplace in Chisamba, Mwanza beat her up, while shouting at her that he was not her husband and that they only had a child together.

“He beat me badly, telling me that I wasn’t his wife, and that he would not marry me and I was disappointed because we were together for four years,” she said.

Lisebele said that she wanted Mwanza to compensate her for the time she wasted waiting for him to marry her.

In his defence, Mwanza said it was not true that the two stayed together for four years, adding that she only stayed with him for one year and moved to his mother’s place when she was expecting his child.

“I never promised her marriage when I impregnated her. I just told her to leave the baby with my mother once it was born,” he said.

Mwanza said he had no intentions of marrying her despite the two having a child together and that her parents were just forcing her on him.

He added that Lisebele’s family asked for dowry and then later compensation for damage but he only paid for damage because he wasn’t ready to marry her.

“It is true that I beat her when she followed me to Chisamba because she came to embarrass me that I was her husband when she was just my girlfriend,” he said.

The matter was adjourned to April 17 for judgment.

Eco nshifwaila ine fi S.. before marriage, ladies take precautions please! infact mulebakanina fye elo calilila shani! Ine ndakana fye elo capanta temulandu, because normally this is what comes out, ukabala mwana cee or when a man just hears that you are expecting his child, ninshi fyonse fya bipa, you would ask yourself on whether you were alone or he too took part in the child recipe because of how some men become hostile. There are only a few men that stick it out with a woman if things go that way. My Good Grandmothers are right to say “temwa kwiswila uu shila kupa!” Mwanza ale landa noku landa ati take my child to my mother, ninshi tawaikalile fye pali banoko abo bene instead of going muku leta ifumo in the first place!
